Setting: Lono, space station orbiting a planet called Soro, habitable, population last estimated at 2.8 billion, mixed species populace. (Planet has a mostly agrarian society, exclusively supplies raw food materials outside of native stuffs to multiple surrounding planets, ~8. Soro has a low percentage of manufacturing facilities when compared to agricultural.) Space station is owned by the Soroian Shipping Corporation (SSC). Employs a decent sum of mercenaries as well as lifetime defense pilots (Between 30 and 45 for mercenary/lifers) while the rest of the station's population is company employees with a small military outfit attached, requirement by law. Mercenaries are housed on the station as part of their contract. The corporation's main profits come from importing and shipping the raw materials from Soro, biggest shipper for the planet. As well as owning the most land of any single company on Soro. The station also processes some of them and sells them but what it processes is mainly for the station's use. The station is fully up-to-date and almost completely self-contained. Defenses bristle all over the outside from missiles to lasers to conventional rounds. The facility can produce its own food supple for nearly two years before needing outside replenishment as well as whatever else the population needs to survive if cut off from Soro. Crime surrounding the station within several light years is rated as Moderate by the military, thus the corporation's high mercenary employment numbers and the requirement to have a military force stationed. Also takes place in surrounding space at surrounding planets. Main Characters: Zakk Rez - Naerian - Male - Mercenary Pilot Lac Rard - Si'itian - Female - Pilot employed by SSC for life Tez - Human - Male - Corporate Pilot Employment Office Manager, Goods seller (Weapons, food, miscellaneous items). Friendly to mercenaries. Secondary Characters: Srack Nawnm - Si'itian - Male - CEO of Soroian Shipping Corporation Kriza Zelnn - Naerian - Female - Owner/Bartender of Exofortress (Bar/Club, mostly Mercenary/Pilot clientele.) Character Descriptions - Enough for story Main: Zakk Rez: Zakk is a mercenary pilot from an outlying system dozen of light years away. He was in the military for 16 years and after being discharged for disobeying direct orders and disorderly conduct he tried toning down his gung-ho lifestyle, which lasted for about 4 months before he decided to sell his piloting and combat skills to the highest bidder that would take him and his past. He arrived at Soro and the station Lono after hearing a rumor that the work was high risk, which he was more concerned with than high pay. He's been at the station for two months upon the start of the story. Lac Rard: Lac is a Soro native, born and raised by her parents who work on a farm owned by SSC. The farm that she grew up on is one of the largest on Soro, covering tens of thousands of acres and is also one of the most productive, making her parents a favorite of Srack's. Growing up she aspired to become a pilot after seeing a mercenary plane shoot down a Jacker that was attempting to disable a freighter, all of this happening right over her head. Her parent's position of power did help to get her to be an apprentice to another Pilot but she is also extremely intelligent and quick minded, able to assess situations and find a way to come out on top. Over the decades she has risen to become the top Pilot under SSC's employment of lifetime flyers. Some despise her because of her background but all envy her undeniable skills. She's been living on Lono for nearly 22 years. Tez: Tez started life as a bastard child, born to a woman in a very high position within SSC. He was abandoned with minutes of being born and to this day doesn't know or give a fuck who his parents are. Tez was adopted by a weapons specialist in the Lono Defense group that handled all station weaponry, onboard and plane based. He learned al the tricks growing up and knows any kind of weapon inside and out. If he doesn't, it doesn't exist or is too dangerous to leave military R&D. With connections inside the military outfit stationed on Lono, Tez can get a pilot almost anything they desire, for a price of course. Most people consider Tez to act like a teenager. Eccentric and an intense technojunkie, with a tendency to get overly excited over new toys. (guns and things that go BOOM) Tez and Lac go back many years, he's a factor in her quick ascent to the top, having guns other pilots could only dream of helped. SSC is aware of his little black market but looks the other way, they also don't know where he gets some of his weapons, some highly experimental that few touch. Tez's weapons have lost SSC some of it's employees. He keeps the pilots supplied with the power to do SSC's bidding. His lust for new things has garnered him a bit of a rap sheet, which few have used against him. Tez HATES being blackmailed. He also likes to sabotage. Secondary: Srack Nawnm: Ever since Srack's father passed away and Srack inherited the position of CEO, SSC's profits have nearly tripled and SSC's power has broadened substantial: politically, economically and militarily. Thought many doubted Srack could take on such a position many soon shut their mouths when SSC's profits wouldn't stop going up month after month, year after year. There are a few that question his methods but Srack doesn't mind as long as they don't do anything about their questions. SSC has come into possession of more and more of Soro's land and agriculture. The farm owners like what they get out of the deal. Lifetime employment in SSC and all the latest farming technology as well as enough money to live quite comfortably. Soro's governing body doesn't appreciate SSC eating away its power but there is little they can do. Few know of Srack's true intentions. Srack plans on owning every last bit of Soroian soil and then holding the planets goods hostage from the surrounding worlds. After a few months and the starving of their populations, the governments would be forced to pay Srack's new prices, prices reaching into deep space. With that kind of money Srack could smile upon the sizeable mercenary force he could build up, as well as starting a more loyal military. With two more stations nearing completion in different orbits of Soro, defending his soon to be claimed prize will be easy. Especially with the pay he gives his mercenaries. The majority of people love Srack, he is a pleasant person with a bit of a dark side but he makes his people happy. Everybody that works for SSC prospers. Happy people are more likely to support his long term goals once they start coming out. Kriza Zelnn: After visiting a relative on Lono only one time Kriza knew she wanted to open a Bar/Club on Lono, especially after hearing about the heavy flyer population. All flyers need a place to unwind and blow their money after all! With no such place on Lono she would have no competition and business would be good. Kriza left a dull, dying station orbiting the planet closest to Soro and didn't have to wait long for Srack to accept her offer and grant her precious space for her Bar/Club Exofortress, and it was a decent amount of precious space. (He really liked the name and her drinks; Srack is known to be seen having a drink once in a while when the place is slow.) After only three days every Merc and Pilot frequented Exofortress and business was good. Kriza has become a gold mine for dirt on flyers and will tell all if she likes you. She isn't that easy to buy, after all, she isn't strapped for money. Exofortress' popularity is helped by Kriza making the best drinks for millions of miles around and with the most flair. She even makes a couple of her own in the back. If you need a distraction, slip Kirza some money and she'll gladly put on one hell of a show, she'll have every patron crowding around the bar to watch her tricks when mixing up a few SuperNovas and StarSlayers. Plot: *Start Part One* After two months of completing menial assignments for SSC, Zakk gets his first assignment that is handed down directly from Srack (Story starts around here). His assignment? Learn the ways of SSC under the guidance of Lac Rard, Srack's personal favorite pilot. Zakk is understandably annoyed but if he has to do it to get to actual combat instead of escorting freighters on week long trips to insane boredom then he would do it. Besides, Zakk could live with having to see Lac's body often. Zakk's second assignment is to fly escort for a personal craft to a farm on Soro containing an SSC corporate employee. SSC is ready to purchase another chunk of land from a willing farmer. Zakk and Lac would also escort the SSC dude on foot. Zakk didn't mind, he had four modified weapons, one for each hand, if he had to shoot some bitches. To say the least, Zakk gets to shoot some bitches, SSC gets pissed over a dead official and a deal gone to shit. SSC investigates, to discover that the Soroian government was involved in the attack. Two more attempted purchases, one more dead official and Srack is ready to let the figure heads roll. After talks to a Soroian government full of liars, Srack sends twenty fighters of Merc/Lifer mix. A week later and SSC controls Soro. To keep things cool with the locals Srack tells them he won't take any land unless the farmers want to sell to him and he won't make shipping through SSC any more expensive for them. Most are cool with that. After hearing about a Coup d'etat and then the perpetrators saying, "Hey, I'm no dictator, I'm not going to take anything from you," many of them sold. Now SSC is in a lovely position. Controlling 97% of Soroian farms worked by happy and best of all, supportive, people; Srack is ready to get the ball rolling. In a projected two months the two new stations would be fully crewed and operational. Sracked wanted the last 3%, very badly, he increased his offers and benefits and all but two farms would sell, no matter what he offered, they 'had bad feelings' about Srack. So. . . Zakk and Lac got an assignment. Assassinate one of the families on the farms and take it over. Zakk has no problem, Lac does. She doesn't like the idea of slaughtering a family because of their beliefs, especially fellow Soroians. The other farm goes down via other mercs successfully. Zakk and Lac's does after a fight but Lac refuses to kill the family's two children. Everybody knows orphaned children due to greed and murder is bad news down the road when they're older. Srack is annoyed but happy, missions accomplished. Soro 100% SSC property, first completely corporate owned planet in the sector. During all of this Zakk and Kriza have become friends, having much in common. He can count on her for any info he needs after several months of friendship. [A few days after the farm raids Kriza invites Zakk during his visit to her bar during the 'night' (An area off of her front) and sex ensues!Woo!] Brackets mean not in the clean version, booo. Several missions from Srack follow to cement SSC's control over Soro. Finally Srack sends an envoy, with himself aboard to the nearest planet to Soro, which also happens to be the most powerful of the planets that depend on Soro for sustaining their inflated (and still growing) populations. Needless to say, they aren't happy about the news. More money for the same products is not something they appreciate; although Srack promised improved shipment times. They would like that at the same or slightly increased price. They are more than a bit pissed off by Srack's sudden change in pricing structure. With Srack essentially telling them, "I can live without you, can you live without me?" they are really starting to hate Srack after kind of liking him before this change. 3/4 through the return trip the convoy is attacked by a small attack group from the planet's military. Without a jump capable engine the shuttle carrying Srack can't jump. Srack has an escort of 10 fighters against 20 bogies. It would be 30 minutes before reinforcements would be at their location. In the end Sracks shuttle is fatally wounded and Srack has to board a fighter in open space, of course in a sealed suit. Zakk and Lac take down the majority of the enemies with the other pilots, losing three before the reinforcements jumped in and helped mop up. After re-boarding Lono and the situation fixed, replacing the lost pilots, Srack decided he was going to annihilate the entire planet as an example to the others who might follow the doomed planet's example. Srack had just the weapon he would need to send a message, 'Don't fuck with SSC.' *End Part One*
