Chapter 82: Promises & Revelations “Human Speech” “Pokemon Speech” ‘Human Thought’ ‘Pokemon Thought’ It was another day back at the Oak Ranch. Many Pokémon were doing their daily routines, either training or exploring the ranch, as we cut to Pidgeot and her flock. Pidgeot was still reeling about what happened back at the merger meeting a few days ago, though a few things had been on her mind since then, and she wanted to get to the bottom of things if she wanted to know the history the flock has with Fearow. “Look, I’m still not happy how you all went behind my back. It was despicable to undermine the authority I have as the flock’s current leader without telling me, even suggesting the flock go against something my father and I have been working up to as flock leaders.” The air around the room was tense as the words escaped her beak. “Let alone bringing my age up in this matter. I remind you that it is something you don’t do to a male, much less a female, whether a flock leader or not. Maturity knows no age. You should be judged by your actions and character, no matter your age. I’ve met the requirements to be a leader cause of my final stage of evolution. I have protected this flock countless times. I have strived to be what this flock has needed me to be. That should be enough.” Pidgeot said this to The Council while her uncle stood beside her, trying to make sure that she didn’t fall out of line as her advisor and family guardian. He had to choose his side for this occasion, so he stood down as leader of The Council per this meeting. He will be resuming his role soon. Doing so for fearing accusations of contempt. After all, being the head of The Council during this difficult time was trouble enough as it was. The Pidgeottos on the Council were looking at each other before one of them, precisely the one who spoke out at Pidgeot during that merger meeting to her, took charge. “Look, Pidgeot, we understand you’re angry, and rightfully so. I will admit that speaking of your age at the time was really out of line on my behalf, but there was a point to be made there. We needed to make sure that you were acting out of your own interests that day and not the cause of Fearow’s influence. Please understand that we are looking out for you just as much as we are of the flock.” The Pidgeotto said to Pidgeot, who glared at him. The look was all that was needed as he was taken aback by this. He soon gathered and maintained his composure before he continued. “We heard you saying that the merger was too soon and despite your reservations, you seemingly agreed to do what would be asked of you right away. Mind telling us why?” This line of questioning bothered Pidgeot more than she was willing to admit. How did they know she had doubts, however slight, of the merger? She had told no one outside of a select few, and if she couldn't trust the few she did as of now, who could she trust as a Leader? Her thoughts were broken as another series of questions came her way. “Not to mention why you didn’t recognize your own family's flock? You would think that, as someone who is working on living up to, if not surpassing, her father’s legacy, you would recognize the flock you grew up on after your father dedicated himself to being strictly Falkner’s. I mean, you barely recognized your own brother. What does it say about you? Would you care to even remember the names of those you would lead? Do you even know our names? Those of elders who came before you who, despite not reaching out final evolution, have maintained this flock’s best interest for longer than you've been born?” He said with vigor, driving his point across as Pidgeot sighed in frustration at the line of questioning and collected herself enough to not beat this Pidgeotto down to a pulp. She really was holding herself back from wanting to hurt her fellow species. It got so bad that it started to burn her feathers, and any Pidgeot driven to that point was one that would almost always lash out against whom ignites their ire. Truly, if it hadn’t been for her willingness to be the mature one in the space, things would have gone haywire long ago. Not to mention that her uncle was watching and holding her back, and rightfully so. “First off, regarding my family's flock, I must remind you that I was a PIdgey the last time I saw it. After being left to fend for myself, I adapted. I pushed forward. Fighting my way through the Rattata, Ekans, and other creatures that saw a weak chick as a free meal. I pushed forward. Becoming a Pidgeotto. Having to overcome become a teenager quicker than I should've just to survive. The day I met my Trainer…” ‘Unofficially, of course, Ash still doesn't know she was the Pidgey he wanted to catch that fateful day. The whole mess of issues started when Spearow evolved to Fearow after Ash threw a rock and hit the avian. Thankfully, everything had been resolved, but she really should tell him one day.’ “...I was close to eating a Caterpie, whom later became like a brother to myself and the team. I know many dread the day they may get captured. Fear of losing your freedom and being away from those you love can do that, but I was not one of them. I explored the region. Fought the criminal organization that is Team Rocket, fought Gym Leaders, saved many from that…that…awful day at the St. Anne, helped stop a gigantic Tentacruel’s rampage, I mean Giratina, I even looked an ancient Gengar in the eye. Despite my fears, I fought. It's why I did not hesitate to fight for the flock. Despite the fact that it had been over a year since I left, and I rejoined to be the leader.” The fire in her soul burned bright. She had been through so much while traveling with Ash and her companions that she may have been a cowering Pidgey to this day if things didn't go the way they did to make her strong, brave, and compassionate enough to care to see that intervention was needed. The final results of that were when the rivalry between her and Fearow came to a head once Ash returned. Those issues were far behind them. They had found a resolution. Why was that so difficult to accept? Why would she be under the influence of Fearow when she stood wing to wing on the matter that this feud of flocks served no one well and needed change? And then to question if she even remembered her kin and other Pidgeys and Pidgeottos was just not necessary. She then continued. “Skarmory and I have the same issue. We’ve been away from our family's flocks for a while and wouldn’t recognize the members unless told otherwise. Second, the big reason I didn’t recognize it was that the flock was smaller the last time I saw it and was part of it. I saw fellow avians in need of help, and when I helped you out, you were very small and had no distinguishable features. From my point of view, you looked like half the flocks from the past, and I didn't hesitate to help because it was the right thing to do. So, I don’t like being called out for not recognizing my own family flock. That matter is mute, given that I’ve been using my father’s teachings, at least what I remember of them, to help with the flock. My tenure has had its fair share of ups and downs, but still, we stand together.” Her words were ironclad. She wasn't perfect, but she was there. She was ready. It hurt to see them feel otherwise and then press on. “What hurts is that I had to learn that you, as a Council, would condemn my own brother, whom I haven’t seen since we were Pidgeys, mind you, for being under Fearow’s care. We were told lies to ensure the fact that you all were hiding the knowledge that we were family from behind our backs and did nothing to remedy those lies. I didn’t even mind that he is Fearow’s godchild, but things could’ve been handled way better, and in doing so, there'd be less issues between myself and him and….” Pidgeot’s uncle held his wing out in front of her to stop her from finishing that statement. Before he added to the conversation. “Pidgeot, dear, please don't go on a tangent here and make the situation worse for yourself.” Her uncle said softly to her, who nodded, knowing he was right. He often was, and so after ruffling her feathers and her irritation away, albeit briefly, she turned to them and finished. “As for the whole merger thing happening sooner rather than later, I was hoping that we could get the merger going, and then we can follow through with anything else added once the Johto League is done and we all come back here. I wasn’t even aware until I came back about the talk of a new Council being formed. Yes, Skarmory filled me in on a lot of things that happened here while I was in the Whirl Islands training, but more information on this new Council was out of my reach.” Pidgeot said as her uncle looked to The Council, who were stunned about the fact that Pidgeot wasn’t aware of that until recently. It was then he interjected. “It was she, Fearow, Skarmory, and Murkrow who came to me with the idea of starting the merger right away and handling the issues with the flocks once things on her team’s Conference run came to an end. Her time traveling was over for some time at least. That is true. She had some concerns, but none she wasn't ready to tackle once the merger was complete. Especially with the murmurs of the flock’s legacy being brought up, from the former leader before Pidgeot’s brother had a run at being the leader, to his…shortcomings…” Pidgeot caught on to how he said that. “And even how we were abruptly left leaderless, her father having left so suddenly. He and his trainer are still out there. He still has not addressed why he chose to leave. Perhaps he will one day, or maybe he won't, but we can't hang his legacy on Pidgeot before you. Because here, his daughter stands. Making amends for actions that, through no fault of her own, have left a sour taste in many of our flock’s beaks. She has done nothing but provide for this flock’s safety. She even had the chance to walk away the day her Trainer came back and never looked back, but still, here she stands. She does not deserve to be called out by her own flock like that. I can guarantee you that this merger was in my niece and nephew’s best interest and was not influenced by any outside force. Yet, you let your past issues with Fearow force you to guide your ambitions. Did you forget that in your haste to assign a Leader to the flock, you let…HIM” The way he spoke, whoever took over in the interim after Pidgeot's father left before she came back, must've been an awful leader. “...it was a time of tyranny for the flock. Thankfully, we wised up and drove out our former leader for misconduct with the help of Mary, Skamory’s Godmother, to make sure it happened properly in a time The Council was too unwilling to do the right thing.” Now, that tidbit of information was not something Pidgeot knew. She may have to discuss that matter with Skarmory later on. Her uncle continued. “I remind you of his rule, since it was far worse than anything I can personally imagine if Fearow was the sole leader for this flock. That Fearow is no more. He accepted his defeat before Pidgeot and has looked out for the best solution to help those dark times be non-existent moving forward. Why do you stand against that progress?” Pidgeot’s uncle spoke up as the group of Pidgeotto looked down as the one from before spoke up. “You should’ve said all that during the rebuttal when we were all calling her leadership about the merger in question, but it seems we misjudged you. That doesn’t change our stance about the merger. Pidgeot, both you and your brother need to grow up and understand why your father was a well-respected leader with no outside influence and not going to Fearow for help. Despite the way he ran the flock, we knew he was acting of his own free will. We hated all he did but could trust it had no connection to Fearow, and that could endure and support until we couldn't and then Mary…” Oh, how they loathed that name… “... intervened and even then things haven't gone much better, have they?” The focus now shifted to Pidgeot. “Clearly, you need more allies and proof that you have matured and can handle things without someone like your uncle holding you back. The only reason why we agreed to let him be out of this new Council for now is because he is the acting leader when you are gone. When you're here and do your job properly, he is the head of The Council and we can’t argue against him but we can argue against the merger if we feel it doesn't serve the flock and anything to do with Fearow, given his past history with us suggest this merger will do more harm than good. Plain and simple." The one Pidgeotto spoke up as Pidgeot looked away, but was still not happy. It looked like they were trying to dance around the reason why she made this meeting in the first place. “If you really have so many issues with Fearow in the first place, why agree to let him still visit if you really think that he might overthrow us?" Pidgeot said, as the group wasn’t aware that she would call them out like that. “No, not just Fearow but Skarmory as well. She’s his niece, and Fearow allowed Murkrow to visit his flock to learn about her family’s heritage as a half Spearow, much like Skarmory. Do you not trust them as well, or are you all that bitter and only feel like having a go after Fearow?” Pidgeot spoke out to them, showing no contempt as her uncle spoke out as well. “Fearow agreed to allow the flock and I to offer aid to their flock if they need it while he’s away. He is currently out of the region to rally any other help we may need, yet you all think he’s the bad guy, so I think my niece has a valid question. Answer it and do not dance around the question.” Her uncle spoke up, his voice showing why he was the leader of The Council and the voice of reason for the flock when needed, as they looked at each other and to them as one spoke up. “A multitude of reasons!” That last statement delivered like a knife to the throat. “While I won’t go into why we have issues with Fearow. He have our own interests to think about. That said, we feel like that we can at least give him some respect, especially given that if it weren’t for him and your father, this flock wouldn’t have been made, but it doesn't mean we TRUST him.” The emphasis on trust was something many avians present took to heart. Without trust, they had very little. “As for Murkrow, her backstory about her father being your father’s apprentice sticks. She got approval from both Fearow and your uncle to visit between flocks because she can be a valuable ally. Not to mention, she’s a member of your Trainer’s team, which goes double for Skarmory, however, for another reason. We don’t know how you managed to find her, let alone convince the goddaughter of Mary, our former Matriarch, to join your eclectic gathering, but Skarmory being associated with her is why statements like: “We can’t have you among us.” or “No, you can’t visit the flock.” Can never leave out beaks, as we don’t want to be in the crosshairs of Mary’s wrath. She is the type who won’t let things go and is very protective of your Trainer’s Skarmory and those under her care or guardianship, especially since she sees her as her niece and not just her legal guardian. Lastly, on Skarmory, her mother, Fearow’s older sister, is a well-respected Fearow and someone your father knows well. While she isn’t a flock leader anymore, her influence is still around, and we can’t push things too far. We are at a standstill with Skarmory. She can neither be a full flock member or yet a true friend to the flock. She just is there.” Pidgeotto said to Pidgeot, who was listening as he finished. “Skarmory has helped out this flock a lot more than we imagined with and without her uncle’s presence, which shows why she’s your ally, and we are currently content to have her here. Despite their bonds to Fearow, your allies have their place in the flock. Whether it stays that way once the merger is complete is to be determined. We can’t speak of these matters anymore. Are we done here or do you have any more questions, Leader?” For some reason, it wasn't sarcasm, but it wasn't a respectful use of the term Leader. Pidgeot was about to address that before asking more about Mary, but her uncle stopped her, shaking his head towards her as she glared at him but let it go. She respected his wisdom, and if now wasn't the time to ask these questions, then so be it, but she would get answers. By the will of Arceus, she would. “I do not, but in fairness, are there any questions you have to ask of me?” She finished trying to be respectful despite her ire. “I noticed that your brother isn’t here, and so while we're speaking of members of the Fearow flock, he's usually with you or in the area at least. Would you mind telling us where he currently is?” One of the council members spoke up, as Pidgeot’s uncle spoke up instantly. “I can answer that. Skarmory sent him off to do some missions. He’ll be back at some point.” “What kind of-” A Pidgeotto began to ask, but Pidgeot's uncle cut him off. “I think this meeting is over. Pidgeot, can we speak with each other in private?” he asked his niece, who nodded as the interrupted Council member spoke up. “Hey, if you two are having a meeting and it has to do with Council issues, it has to be done with the Council pre-” Pidgeot’s uncle cut off the member’s attempt to be intrusive once more. “Family matters!” The Council member staggered back. He was not expecting that outburst. “You need not pry into everyone’s conversations. Or do you have a problem with us having a private conversation because while I am not a lead council member during this meeting, I still hold that role and I deserve the respect and courtesy to not have you hover in affairs that do not concern you. Do we have any issues, gentlemons?” He definitely showed why he was made the head Council member and not the group in front of them. As they looked at each other and shook their heads in objection. “Now this meeting is done, so be gone.” The Council scattered, leaving Pidgeot and her uncle to speak alone. “Good. We need to talk about what we are planning on doing next. There is no need to tell you things are not well with matters related to this merger.” Pidgeot’s uncle spoke up. She nodded and the two took off to the ranch area, away from The Council’s reach. Pidgeot has had her suspicions about The Council for a while but the way they’ve been acting lately was really catching her and her uncle’s attention. Those matters, however, would have to wait as we join Ash and company as they are leaving the Olivine City Pokemon Center. Now that his battle with Jasmine was over, he needed to decide who his team would be moving forward. These Mons, for better or worse, would remain with him at least until Ecruteak or even Bonitaville, where Brock would have his time to shine. He'd hate to say this out loud. Still, he had been selfish in holding his gang of friends back for him from participating in quite a number of almost back to back to back tournaments. Though those tournaments proved useful to push his Pokémon to new evolutions as well as the return of past members like Primeape and Lapras, the time it took away from Brock or Misty accomplishing their own goals, just as Ash had wanted to complete his, was undeniable. If that meant taking a step back to give them their due, he'd make more than enough time for that to happen, and that would help him bond with Pokémon he needed to and hadn't had the opportunity to. Looking back, he'd gone a bit catch crazy. Though they kept up their training at Oak's Ranch, his personal time with many Pokémon was lacking. He hoped this current lineup of Pokémon would help them overcome that and show he was going to be different. He needed to be. So with him now was the team of Pikachu, Muk, Noctowl, Pupitar, Murkrow, Ursaring, Umbreon, and Dragonair. Having exchanged his Mons around, the team was stocked, locked, and ready to rock as they left the city. Ash needed to address a few things with a few of them and bond more with others, but more than anything, he needed to have a good amount of certain Pokémon when they went to Ecruteak City. Though he could technically carry more than a dozen Mons at a time, it was good to have a smaller team for now. Go back to basics a bit. Bonitaville was somewhere between Ecruteak and Goldenrod, so en route to Brock's big event, the plan was to check in on Morty, get any updates from him, and give him one regarding the number of Guardians currently gathered on their end and those who remained tentatively free or, if captured, would require finding a way to establish contact with their present Trainers. The key to that is that Murkrow and Noctowl needed to be with Ash, and he needed to spend time with them. As he and the group now made the trek to Route 39, he let the avians out. Murkrow took to the skies with glee. The Johto breeze was cooler than Kanto's, and it made the flights more enjoyable before fatigue from the humidity Kanto was famous for made it unbearable to fly. Noctowl had found his place on Ash's shoulder opposite to Pikachu. However, he was silent, and the reason why would be made clear to Ash and friends soon as they were near the Miltank farm that Noctowl had quite a heavy hand in making sure Team Rocket was successful in securing many Miltanks for their nefarious purposes. This brought shame to the shiny Noctowl. Ash took the time to have a heart-to-heart with Noctowl as the group carried on. Misty and Brock were currently discussing what Brock would do at the event. He narrowed it down to presenting a few of his homemade recipes for Pokefood, highlighting some of his own Pokémon like Crobat. Knowing that the Pokémon had evolved through friendship and so had reached his final stage, the Pokémon felt a deep bond with Brock for all the care and love he provided not only as a Trainer but also as a Breeder, amongst other things. “You know that wasn't your fault, right?” The Noctowl simply bowed his head. He was so ashamed. “We will recover them, and The League will understand your role in all this wasn't your fault.” He hoped the promise of finding the missing Miltank would ease the owl, but his reply made it clear it didn't. “I was at fault. Despite all the good that's come from breaking the hold Team Rocket had over me, I did so many evil things, Ash. Horrible things. I don't know if I'll ever be worthy of forgiveness for what I've done. I feel so ashamed for all I did.” “And that's why you are worthy of forgiveness.” That confused the owl, but Ash elaborated. “Truly evil people have no remorse. They can level a city and drink tea like it's a normal occurrence. They don't care what they do as long as the means justify the ends. I can't begin to imagine what you did or what you felt at the time, but on this day, you feel regret. That's your true nature. You are ready to take responsibility for your past actions and make amends. You are willing to do good, and even if it's one small act of random kindness at a time, you will do more good than bad once everything is said and done. And I will help you however I can along the way.” He turned his head, and the two locked eyes. Knowing in their hearts the statement to be a promise. A promise to be kept. “I know I failed you once by not arriving sooner so you could join this family of mine, and for that, I will apologize til my dying breath, but you're here now. You are on the right path; it doesn't matter how you got here. It matters that you're here now. I am ready to make up for my own shortcomings with you, and I know you will do the same to make sure all that Team Rocket got away with before doesn't happen again.” That made the owl chirp a bit excitedly. His Trainer, his friend, was right. “I will try. I can promise that.” The sweet moment was then interrupted as Murkrow landed on Ash's head. “Whatcha doing…?” She asked curiously wondering what went down while she enjoyed the skies. “Just giving Noctowl reassurance that we are not judged by our past actions but by what we do moving forward.” That truly made the owl perk up as the crow-like bird interjected. “I figured you were updating Noctowl about Ecruteak and the Guardian situation.” Ash slapped his forehead. He had forgotten Noctowl wasn't around the first time they heard the lore of Ho-oH's Guardians when they were in Ecruteak last time. “It's ok, Ash. Charizard has told me some of the legend, but even he doesn't know much. I'm not completely ignorant of the role many of us seem to have in regard to this legend.” That helped ease Ash's worries a bit. Still, he had to go over that legend with some of his Mons. Including Dragonair because, although Charizard seemed to be the confirmed descendant of the legend’s Dragonite, upon revelation, he had a twin, and that twin had features like Murkrow, such distinguishable features like her eyes, the core detail of the legend stating… "For centuries, these Pokémon have passed these to their offspring and were given unique features that not normal members of their evolutionary lines have.” "From changes in their genetics like eye coloring, bigger than usual, size differences, or can be used as protection from something they don't like. For example, being forced to join a trainer, they don't want to even if they were forced to be used.” …Ash couldn't deny the inner undeniability that Dragonair may too be part of the legend in some way. He would bring Scizor and Charizard in as they neared or were in Ecruteak itself, but until then, he'd focus on the Pokémon at hand. “That's good, but it'll be important to hear all we know about the legend so far.” Pouring over the details and Pokémon related to the legend, Ash saw Noctowl's eyes light up. The legend holding a true sense of purpose as to why the shiny coloring made him so unique. Dragonair was released to hear the legend, just in case, but she showed little interest in it. Unlike her brother, she was confident that it didn't involve her, but she was glad to know the legend before she was recalled. There were also Pokémon yet to be encountered, like the Lucario line, Gyarados (though finding the one specific Guardian amidst the hundreds, if not thousands, of the rampaging serpents across the Pokemon World would prove near impossible, the hope they would find it was high), a Machamp and even a Latios. This legend needed their attention, but they couldn't put the entire weight of a legend on their shoulders. As it was meant to be then, when the time was right, all these Pokémon would unite when needed. Somehow, it would come to be. However… “Is part of the reason why you haven't found the means to evolve me yet is because of that legend mentioning a Murkrow?” Taken aback, Ash stated. “Of course not. Why would you…” And then it hit him. Like a train. “You want to evolve, don't you?” The mischievous crow leaned over over his head and batted her majestic blue eyes at Ash. They truly made her stand out among the usual red eyes her species dawned. “It had crossed my mind once or twice, but I can't hold it against you. Unfortunately, Arceus found it hilarious to make my species have to evolve with a Dusk Stone. The only stones worse to find than that are the Shiny and Ice Stones, or so I've been told. But to truly be amongst my peers as an equal, I know that I have to evolve. There's not much left I can learn or do as a Murkrow, and perhaps that legend can be made better when I'm a Honchkrow.” At this, the crow couldn't hold back a small giggle. Ash couldn't help but do the same. He had to admit, with the slew of evolutions that occurred over the past few weeks, if his Pokémon wanted to, they would not be denied of this vital change to reach their full potential. Not to say one-stage Pokemon like his Skarmory couldn't do the same, but they'd do so in other ways. Now knowing this was his Pokémon’s desire, he would do what he could to make it happen. Perhaps Ecruteak or Bonitaville would prove useful in this venture. “Heard crystal clear, girl. I'll find a way to get you a Dusk Stone. I promise.” “I trust you will.” And so, with that bonding moment, the hero's journey moves forward when we return to Oak’s Ranch. Pidgeot and her uncle made it to the ranch, landing in a clearing out in the open. Many Pokémon saw them conversing. They would think that they were discussing plans as a team or something. The reality was much different. Pidgeot sent one of her team members to see if they could get Skarmory and see if she was free to talk, given that she’s in charge along with another member of Fearow’s flock while he’s gone. This would prove the opportune time, as while the member left, it was just in time for Pidgeot to let out some steam. And boy, was she mad, scratch that, no, she was pissed about what just happened back at The Council meeting, even producing enough body heat to cause her to once again start burning feathers to the point that you could literally smell warm air radiating from her and see steam emanate from them. This was an even more intense show of her frustrations than when Charizard accidentally called her fat by comparing her to a rock back in the Whirl Islands. She was ranting while her uncle let her have her tantrum and blow off any ill will from this stressful day. He knew better not to get in the way of a female when they are mad or face the wrath of them himself, and with having a mate and being a father to a daughter, he would know. “I can’t believe that they brushed me off like that and danced around the question like that, uncle. WHAT’S THE POINT OF ME LEARNING THE FLOCK'S ISSUES WITH FEAROW IF THEY WILL TIP TOE AROUND THE ISSUE AND I’M STRINGED ALONG LIKE THAT?” Pidgeot yelled at her uncle. While she knew it was not his fault, he couldn’t blame his niece for what had transpired earlier. “I thought you, being by my side there, might at least help me with that regard, uncle, yet they just treated it like it was a matter not worth their time and attention. I did not get much out of it and was left with more questions than answers.” Pidgeot said to him as he held out his wing to calm her a bit. “Take a deep breath, Pidgeot, and don’t let your anger get to the point that all your feathers would be burned. You’re just like your father when he’s mad and does that…” that statement did not help with a scowl from Pidgeot directed at him, but nonetheless he continued “...and it did him no good. I’ll only ask you to find a way to cool off, please, dear. If either your mother, aunt, or father finds out that something happened to you while you are angry or it led to you being kicked out of the flock for this, I will never forgive myself.” He said to her, who sighed and calmed down slightly as he continued. “Please understand the situation I’m in as your legal guardian, your uncle, and not to mention the head Council member. There’s only so much I can and can’t do when it comes to these proceedings and trust me, if it were up to me, I would have already replace them on the spot but without proof of misdeeds, kicking them out just out of spite, will make you and I face Mary and not in the way you wanted.” This was sound advice. Pidgeot needed to meet Mary eventually, but to do so under unfavorable terms with The Council poisoning the reputation of her leadership style and more beforehand would not accomplish much of what she’s strived to accomplish. “While you are in the clear right now and have no issues. Gossip and misinformation can be attributed in her having to visit and correct accusations of misconduct in any manner she sees fit; you have a lot to live up to as you're still bound to what leaders vow to do. Be there for the flock, help other flocks if needed and do not do something stupid that could cost you your status. I took on the role of your advisor to make sure that you are safe and follow in your father’s footsteps, who you know was revered for his actions.” At least on that, they could agree. Despite his departure, he was still praised to this day as a leader worth emulating. But would she want that? The comparison between her way and his would always be there, but she was not yet sure whether she would follow in his exact footsteps or venture out and do things that radically changed the way the flock operated. That was still so far ahead into the future. She still needed to get to know her flock. “And trust me, just like you when you became leader, I didn’t recognize you either. I can see where you were coming from when you said you didn’t recognize the flock when you returned some time ago. It wasn’t until after you told me who your father was that I recognized you and your potential. I knew you were meant to be the leader.” Her uncle said as Pidgeot looked down, she admitted that she didn’t recognize him as her uncle back then, not even until recently, before her brother came back to Kanto, as he continued. “I will admit I should’ve said something shortly after when we met. It just needs to wait. I had to make sure that you were out of The Council’s ire, given so many other Pidgeottos were seeking the leadership, that you, as a Pidgeot, were pushed to the top of the list. They were irate that they were overlooked, but after you showed your mettle, it made it easier to accept they weren't ready. That they wouldn't be ready anytime soon. After that, being your advisor was possible and I have done what I can to make sure that you are on the right path. While I do regret not telling you about your brother sooner, I wasn’t sure how you would respond about him being Fearow’s godchild. Not to mention he had just lost his status as leader just months before you became leader, and back then, we needed you more as a leader than just as a family member of the flock, especially given that your brother and I are the only blood relatives you have here.” Pidgeot listened and understood his situation. There were things he could and couldn’t do, and she had no control over them. Her anger simmered as he spoke up. “Are you going to be okay, dear?” he asked her. She nodded but not confidently, and he could tell why. He wouldn't press on, not until she got all the answers to her questions, at least. “Once Skarmory gets here, I’ll let her speak what she knows and offer my two cents on the matter. But what happened with your brother? That’s something he will have to tell you, dear. But let’s just say it has to do with that second point you made about the flock being smaller than you remember. That is all I can say. It’s his past, not mine.” Her uncle said as he placed her wing on her back while saying all that, as she smiled and nodded. “Now, let’s hope that both Fearow and your brother break through to find whatever it is they are seeking out while they’re gone. It’s the only way we can get some footing on this situation with The Council and help you out, dear.” Her uncle finished as Pidgeot nodded. She was about to speak, but only for a familiar voice to call out to them. “I hope we’re not interrupting anything, you two?” the voice said. It was Skarmory and Pidgeot’s brother, who had just arrived as Pidgeot and her uncle finished talking. Skarmory looked tired from all the meetings and missions while her uncle was away, even though he was away for a few days. Pidgetto, on the other hand, had just returned from the mission that his uncle, not Skarmory, had sent him to do. He looked spent but had enough energy to talk and participate in this conversation. “We’re just finishing up our conversation. Are you two gonna be okay to talk? As I can see, both of you look like you two had a day that would make even a Snorlax tired.” Pidgeot’s uncle spoke to both of them, who nodded. They may have gone through a lot in the last few days, but they weren’t going to say no to any news and conversation with Pidgeot and her uncle, as Pidgeotto noticed Murkrow wasn’t there and was about to say something, only for Skarmory to speak up, noticing this. “She’s with Ash, and not sure if she’ll be back before we leave. Something about some sort of legend and why she’s different, along with Noctowl, but that’s not why we’re here. Before we begin, I’m glad you guys got me away from all that. I really needed a break from all that, and I just got done with a meeting with another flock’s messenger, as it has to do with this situation, but I'd rather save it for now. How are things going with The Council on your end, you two? Cause from the sound of it, that didn’t go well, given I can hear your yelling all the way from my flock.” Skarmory said to Pidgeot and her uncle as the two nodded. A slight blush of embarrassment fell on Pidgeot's beak, but then she gathered herself and answered. “Perch yourselves 'cause we got a lot to talk about, you two…” Pidgeot said to the two, and everyone did as she said. Pidgeot explained what had happened during her meeting with The Council, not word for word, but the points needed to be made, as both her brother and Skarmory could tell now why she was mad and rightfully so, as her brother spoke up. “Man, even with us willing to try and make things right, they still doubt all of our abilities as leaders and our positions in the flock.” Pidgeotto said to his sister and the group, who nodded as Skarmory spoke up. “I’m aware that Fearows have a nasty reputation, but to purposely not trust my uncle is something that goes beyond this merger. To think they still had their feathers ruffled since my first meeting with them after I joined the team. Sorry about that day, sir.” Skarmory said to Pidgeot’s uncle, who nodded, understanding that it was all a mistake and those it can be forgiven. “It’s fine. We didn’t know who you were, and I hadn’t seen you since you were only a few years old, Skarmory. We had to make sure that you were who you said you were. It was when you mentioned who your godmother was that got them to listen to you a lot more. Right now, they trust you enough to visit and help out, but they still have trouble trusting you in general. That was not the point of this meeting, and I’m sure you are also tired of all that mistrust, Skarmory.” Pidgeot’s uncle spoke to her, who shook her head on the last part. “It’s fine. At least I’m not pacing around speaking my mind on pointless things and arguing with other flock members and Fearow leaders in the area. However, I do have some good news, and it has to do with my recent meeting.” Skarmory said as they tried to figure out what was coming, as she continued. “We just got a visit from one of Mary’s scouts to inform me about what had transpired and what her stance on the situation is. She’s willing to aid support for the flock and for you as a leader, Pidgeot, if you need it. However, her wings are tied with involving herself with ruffling feathers with The Council. She knows they have secrets, and she will have some of her contacts look into members of it. That means they’ll have to look into you as well, Sir.” Skarmory said to Pidgeot’s uncle, who shook his head. He knew that there would be a catch to look into them, but he knew it was fair and replied. “Not like it’s something that can be brushed under the rug if The Council is being investigated. It has to be everyone in it, not just them. I have nothing to hide as I’ve known her since this flock’s inception and she knows that. So I take that your uncle followed through about allowing Pidgeot and her team to visit your flock if needed?” He asked as she nodded and turned to Pidgeot. “Right now, we have full permission to visit the flock, but we still abide by their rules and leader's standards. Namely, we don’t just roam into the flock unannounced unless we either stumble upon an incident by accident, we have business with the flock or they need our help. However, fair warning, we will be subjected to background checks through their scouts. This is protocol we're expanding on as part of the flock merger notions, and it has to be run by Mary and her co-leader before we can gain access.” Skarmory warned the group as Pidgeot wasn’t subjugated to this when she visited Fearow’s flock recently and spoke up. “Is that really necessary? I mean, you would think that with us being the main representatives of our flocks, we should have clear access.” Pidgeot spoke to Skarmory, who was about to say something, only for Pidgeot’s brother to speak for Skarmory. “Sadly, all Fearow flocks go through this, especially with rogue leaders and poachers out there. We don’t know if anyone is telling the truth about who they are or if they are there on official business. Both Skarmory and I had to go through that when we were first introduced to the Fearow and Spearow flock,” Pidgeotto said to his sister as Skarmory spoke up. “Trust me, this is one of the reasons why I’m very distant when it comes to talking about my connections, whether it be about my family or my ties to Mary. We don’t know who is listening and who would use that information for their own purposes. Well, that and I have promised my godmother to keep a tight beak about my ties to her, however that's not the point right now.” Skarmory said as Pidgeot knew that she would have to go through that topic soon enough, and now seemed to be as good a time as any. “Sadly, right now, we’re gonna have to talk about that. Especially if I want to know what I’m getting into when it comes to visiting her flock, if we’re in the Mt. Mortar area, and if you don’t mind Skarmory.” Pidgeot asked her teammate, who nodded without hesitation as Pidgeot’s uncle spoke up. “If I remember correctly, Skamory, you were born in that said mountains as well. You should be pretty familiar with that area before you start. What do you think, Skarmory?” Pidgeot’s uncle addressed Skarmory, who nodded but also shook her head. “Yes and no. As I mentioned a few days ago, it’s vast and basically filled with a lot of flocks. You know, Zubats and other species love the cave environment, and it’s also easy to get lost in. From what I was told by both her and my uncle, her flock is somewhere in the main central area of the mountain range, but that can be anywhere, as I’ve gotten lost there a few times while growing up.” Skarmory said before Pidgeotto spoke up. “I can concur about that. I’ve only visited a couple of times. One was when Skarmory was born when I was with dad, and the other was when I was with Fearow when Mary became leader. It’s really easy to get lost in, and that's why many humans and flocks don’t usually stick around that area that much, and it’s a haven for poachers as well at times, no better than here that is.” Pidgeotto said to the group, warning them not to go there, not by themselves anyway. Pidgeot had no plans to go there yet unless she was with Ash and the others, as Skarmory interjected. “So what do you need to know? And given that your brother and uncle have a history with her as well, I don’t mind you sharing your thoughts and experiences with her.” Skarmoy said to the group as Pidgeot was trying to figure out how to approach her with these questions without feeling intrusive, but that was something she had no choice. “I would like to know what Pokemon she is, what type of flock she runs so that way we can approach it without causing conflict and how she runs the flock, especially given as us being flock representatives, we have to abide by her rules as a leader and be respectful as though we were a member of their flock as per our agreements with other flock leaders that is.” Pidgeot asked Skarmory, who nodded. Many troubles were avoided just by showing respect of the ways of other leaders than their flocks, even if you disagreed with them personally. “Before I begin, what do you know about my godmother?” Skarmory asked Pidgeot, who took a deep breath and remembered what her brother and others had told her. “Mostly from what my brother and others have said. I believe that she’s the type of Mon who makes sure that leaders stay in line and do not go rogue, or they face losing their status if things go bad for them. Another thing I just found out is she’s tied to this flock, not just cause of her family hierarchy and a family friend to my dad, but someone who is very protective towards you and is the reason why The Council won’t mess with you or touch you when it comes to you visiting the flock well one of the reasons.” Pidgeot declared, trying to word her words without making Skarmory angry, who sighed and acknowledged the statement to be true. “And that last part is why I uphold my promise to Mary and why I hate bringing my connections to her up. I may be spoiled by my uncle and mother, but mentioning that she’s my godmother is something that I was personally asked by her to not to brag about or talk about unless pressed on the issue, or in this case, having to talk about her to validate my place in the flock. You may think that she’s the big bad female who targets flock leaders, but she would rather do things diplomatically and hear both sides of the story before passing judgment on them. She may have what many would call an “it’s her way or the highway” attitude, but I can guarantee you that, given the amount of stuff she’s been through in her lifetime, she’s earned the right to have it. She is not the type to argue with, whether it be in or out of her flock.” Skarmory said to the group as Pidgeot was listening. Soon, Pidgeot’s uncle spoke up. “I can guarantee you that you’re not gonna have issues with her flock from the last time I spoke with her. Sadly, I have no experience with her co-leader and how he handles things, as I should tell you her flock is a joint flock made up of two different flocks. It is one of the larger flocks to be within Kanto and Johto.” Pidgeot’s uncle said to the group as Skarmory spoke up on the last part. “You may have heard that there’s a pretty large flock out there. Well, one for those, that’s her flock. It’s not just the largest Spearow flock in the Mt. Mortar area but also in the region. If we had gone through the merger in our flock's current state, we would only have scratched half of her flock. Well, that’s what I heard from other flocks and my uncle, that is.” Skarmory said to Pidgeot’s uncle. Pidgeot was surprised to hear that, and she took note of the Spearow flock, as that was something that would help her figure out what type of Pokémon Mary was. Skarmory continued. “Well, I can tell you you shouldn’t have issues with him from Mary’s visit to the flock recently. He’s her mate and someone who handles the missions and any needs of the flock when Mary isn’t off working on things with other leaders. He also has ties to my family's flock, from what Mary told me as my mother’s former second in command. I guess some things are still tied to my old flock, huh?” Skarmory said with a chuckle as she composed herself when Pidgeot spoke up. “From the sound of it, I assume that she’s either a Fearow or half one like you and Murkrow. Uh, no offense there on that last part if that isn’t true at all about her or both.” Pidgeot said, trying not to make assumptions about Skarmory's godmother as she smiled. “You sure that you haven’t heard more about her Pidgeot on what you just said there?” Skarmory said to Pidgeot, amused but not offended, as Pidgeot was taken aback by her amusement at this situation. “Well, I assume that, cause of the way things have been said from the way Fearow flock have their rules and all that, she has to be at least one or the other.” Pidgeot said, eyes looking around, embarrassed a bit as her brother spoke up. “Actually, you’re on the mark about her. Well, on the last part about her, that is sis.” Pidgeotto said to his sister, who was taken aback by what he said, as their uncle and Skarmory nodded. Skarmory then added. “She’s like Murkrow and me. She’s half one, and you’re actually on point. She’s a Skarmory, just like me, actually, with a lot more traits that many might not realize. From her own beak, some things about her are what I could possibly be known for when I get older. She has a wider wingspan, sharper beak, and taller than a normal Skarmory; even the sharpness of her wings is much sharper than that of a normal one. While mine haven’t sharpened to their fullest yet, I’m almost a mirror image of her. It's uncanny how much I'll look like her when I get older with one exception: her eyes are a bit of a mixture between the Fearow and Skarmory coloring, not say Murkrow levels of color difference. Still, enough where you can tell who she is compared to any other Skarmory out there, and she also has a bit of an accent, especially since she was born and raised in Hoenn. Not saying all have that, but more of a southern-like accent and is easily distinguish enough to know it is her.” “So that's what they meant when The Council said that she sees you as her niece, not just as her godchild. I took it as though you’ve known her a lot longer than most can imagine.” Pidgeot asked Skarmory, who affirmed her and then looked up and said. “I’ve known her since the day I hatched, when my mom was away on missions, and I also felt her guiding presence when I wasn’t capable of flying and she took the time to teach me. She’s taken care of me most of my life, teaching most of the both halves of my bloodline. Though I still yearn to learn more from my father whenever I’m with him, I'm happy she never withheld any information from either side of my family. She’s been more of an aunt, and for a time, I thought she was and was not aware of her role as my godmother. But we’re off-topic here. If we get to see her, just a heads up, she won’t hesitate to act like that at times, and I’m not embarrassed about it.” Skarmory said, trying to change the issue, and continued talking about her godmother being her guardian. “While she is a leader in her area, she doesn’t have a Council. Instead, she has an area for leaders and their representatives to hold meetings and things of that nature. Right now, she’s being a little more strict, especially recently. She just became a mother, which was the reason why she came here not long ago. So, if you think she’s a bit out of line or pushes things a bit, please understand it’s something she can’t help. It can be problematic at times, but she knows what she’s doing. Is there anything else you wanna ask, or can we move on?” Skarmory asked Pidgeot, who shook her head, feeling that she had enough information for now and knew she could come back to Skarmory for more down the line if needed. “I think I would like to see how she runs things for myself if we do run into her, but I will keep in mind all you've said should things start to get rowdy,” Pidgeot said shortly after her uncle spoke, adding one more thing to this conversation. “I think one key piece of information you and many others aren’t aware of is that she's one of the founders of this flock.” Now that was a surprise. “Alongside myself, your mother, uncle, and Falkner’s PIdgeot, she is one of the reasons why this flock is as prominent as it is to this date. This was mentioned during our meeting with The Council when they mentioned Fearow.” At this bit of news now things were somewhat starting to fall in place about their history with him as he continued. “It was mentioned earlier that her uncle brought Mary to help with our previous leader, the tyrannical one, not Pidgeotto here.” Pointing to his nephew, before facing Skarmory. “When HE went rogue, did your uncle tell you what happened that day? Or did he just give you a small gist of what may have happened, Skarmory? This is important before I add my own info on the matter.” Pidgeot’s uncle finished. He wanted to get straight to the point of why her godmother was mentioned and why the flock has issues with Fearow up as Skarmory took a deep breath and closed her eyes. “Only what my uncle and most of the flock told me, but not too much of what was said. I can tell you what I know, but it's only a small amount. I was in Hoenn with my father during that time and didn’t get back to Johto until almost the time I met you all ñ, so please keep that in mind if my memory of what he told is hazy at any point. Mary never told me any of this, and I'm beginning to understand why,” Skarmory said to the group, which nodded and was ready to speak up. “From what my uncle told me, Damien’s Pidgeot, your former leader before your brother had a brief run at leading the flock, and our Pidgeot here took over, was one of the most ruthless leaders known to the flock. He took over your flock before a more appropriate member could stand in. He had his way until he was forced out and your brother could have his chance to prove himself to run it. He was diabolical. He beat those who didn't follow things his way and would only help those he felt would meet his needs and could profit off of. Letting most members of other flocks be alone and unprotected if they ran into poachers. The “help” he gave were to those he could bully and take over their flocks, going behind the council’s backs on many occasions. My uncle, while he was still going through his own issues as a leader, wanted to work with your flock to put a stop to him, even trying to contact Mary to get her to help put a stop to him. The problem is that she showed up just before he could tell anyone. I have a feeling that The Council felt like my uncle went behind their backs and did not warn them beforehand or tell them his plans. My guess it’s that they believed that if he went behind their back to get rid of a tyrant, then what else could he be capable of? Was he plotting something? Which is utter Tauros crap, no offense to Ash’s herd, cause they turned a blind eye to many things Damien's Pidgeot did behind their backs and when my uncle tries to do the right thing he gets treated as the enemy. And yet they still abide by you being his godchild, Pidgeotto?” Skarmory said to Pidgeotto. Pidgeotto nodded, understanding her frustrations. Then Pidgeot’s uncle spoke up. “You’re on point on a lot of what happened, Skarmory. With one slight detail that the council doesn’t know, he told me his plans to contact her, but was hoping that she would’ve started making her way here before we were aware of it. Don’t get me wrong. We were willing to contact her to get rid of him; we just weren’t expecting her to be here so quickly. The sad part is that he and I were discussing this before bringing it to the rest of the Council. I need to remind you that the Council represents all flocks in this area, not just this flock. While its members live here in our flock, they represent the other flocks if needed. This was the first of two incidents that caused the trust issue with your uncle. The other was well...” Pidgeot’s uncle looked at Pidgeot’s brother, who looked away in shame as he knew where this conversation was going. “Let’s just say they felt like Fearow let down the flock by helping raise and teaching your brother here to be a flock leader shortly after he had evolved from a Pidgey. Pidgeotto, you know that you’re going to have to tell the group what happened. This is your time to move from the past as well,” he said to his nephew, not as a flock member but as his family. Pidgeotto looked down and took a deep breath, and Pidgeot spoke up. “Bro, what happened? I am aware that Fearow saved you that day, but that is not the entire story. I've been told to ask you or Fearow what happened. I know we agreed not to bring it up for some time, but we’re past that point. I do need to know the other reason why the flock has issues with your godfather, so please, brother. I need all the information that's available to help me understand all this.” Pidgeot said to him. He looked troubled but knew she was right. He spoke up. “The best way to put it is what didn’t happen that day, sis?” Pidgeotto said, looking into his sister's eyes. He briefly closed his own soon after trying to stay calm while Pidgeot listened as he continued. “It happened a couple of months before you returned and became the flock leader. It had been only a few weeks after Fearow drove off Damien’s Pidgeot from the flock. I just evolved that day after a day of training and learning from Fearow. I went to the flock to tell them and the Council about my evolution; however, they wanted to test me and see how much I learned. It all felt so rushed.” Pidgeotto said to the group. Soon his uncle spoke up. “You also turned 11 that day, not just evolved, nephew. I had no say in this. The Council outvoted me to get you on some missions to see how much you learned from Fearow, much to our protests and reactions to it. We needed another leader soon, and while I was a temporary one, my other duties made it so I wasn't available enough to run it fully.” their uncle said as Pidgeotto nodded, and he spoke up. “I passed almost all the missions, from helping the needs of the flock to showing my skills as a flock medic when needed. Safe to say things were going well until that fateful mission. A poacher attack.” Pidgeotto finished. His eyes turned to the side, upset, as Pidgeot was slightly surprised by hearing that. “The plan was simple. To show that I’m capable of saving the flock members and bringing them back for aid when we found them. All I had to do was ask one of the scouts to contact Fearow, as he had a few members of his own taken that day. I knew he was more than happy to help. But…” Pidgeotto hesitated. Pidgeot could see he was holding back and asked. “Things didn’t go as planned, did they?” She pressed as her brother nodded slowly, as he gulped, then continued. “I messed up badly. I was about to ask them to go get him, only for the poachers to speak up, talking about how they needed to focus on moving their catches further away from the forest. I jumped the gun and called the flock to try and stop them. I think Fearow was also scouting the area as well and went to help however, things got from bad to worse that day. You noticed when you joined the flock that it seemed small, sis. Well, the result was that half the flock was captured by them. Everyone, including major members, elders, and those who you probably would recognize if they were still in the flock, was all gone. Lifelong friends vanished, and it was not just our flock but my godfather’s as well.” Pidgeotto said a bit of a tear in his eye happened to show as Pidgeot could tell why he didn’t like talking about it. Their uncle reading the room, spoke up for his nephew. “I can continue from here, my boy. That incident was the final nail in the coffin for The Council. While I didn’t blame Fearow for what happened, they felt like Fearow had a part in this whole incident. He failed to raise their future leader properly or arrive in time to help as they felt he should. Because of that, Pidgeotto wasn't fit to lead, though he was the one who stood to inherit his father's role as leader. Many felt the peace between us and his flock was over. The Council still let him look after Pidgeotto as his guardian. I couldn't personally do it. Fearow knew what he signed up for as a godparent, and it was agreed on before your father left to be with his trainer that it would be this way, so we couldn’t just tell your brother that he can’t spend time with Fearow. Despite all that happened, Pidgeotto was ready for guidance and support. Fearow would give him that which he needed.” Pidgeot was taken aback by how much of an impact Fearow had on her brother's life. Part of her wondered if he would've benefited from her own presence within the flock prior to her return, but that was all it could have been. Wishful thinking. Past can't be changed; for better or worse, he had gone through the shame of his failed mission. He had to deal with the mistrust of the Council, and he had to deal with it without his sister around. This made her sad to know her brother's hardships without her around, but she remained stoic as her uncle pressed on. “However, we agreed to let your brother try again to be a leader once he turned 13…” Directing the next part of the conversation directly to his nephew. “...which you are now or when you evolved fully into a Pidgeot to help you get more experience and be a lot more mature, you'd be given another chance to be the flock leader. I wasn’t expecting you to try and sabotage your sister's leadership during her run as one Pidgetto.” This merited interrupting. “I said this before to you when we had our discussion as to why I had my issues with you. It’s the whole fact that the whole flock just went with a new leader, hurt. It meant not going by the established agreement. It felt like no one needed me. Plus, not telling me who she was was the wrong call. When you mentioned that you were told that the new leader was a family friend, I probably would’ve let it go right there. If it were someone we knew would care for the flock, I wouldn't have minded. Maybe go as far as asking the new leader how their family knew mine, and maybe worked things out, but that didn’t happen and some part of me was bitter. It felt as if I had been betrayed by my own flock and cast aside for the shiny new bird in town. You saw that when Ash came back, and you beat Fearow in battle. I was really focused on being a leader again, which clouded my judgment. It was just the final straw on top of everything. I was going through a lot when what happened happened. It was when I knew I had lost my status to be a leader one day. To think my only sister, who was only a Pidgey the last I saw her, was that Pidgeotto who evolved to lead the flock and is now the Pidgeot standing in front of me, was overwhelming. I mean, now looking at you, you definitely look like Mom, and I have come to accept that you are definitely someone who is a real leader, while I sat here being bitter and childish and, won’t lie, a bit jealous back then. Hating humans for what they’ve done in the past, thinking they’re all the same, only wanting to capture us, taking us away from our families, and not caring about what we want, only seeing us be used like tools for battle was the only way I could justify my own shortcomings. Yes, we need them to get stronger and all, but for me, unless it’s the Pokemon Centers or local Rangers, I could never trust a human back then.” Pidgeotto said with a little bit of hurt and a little hate in his voice, but not the type of hate that he had when Ash came back for Pidgeot. “Then you met your trainer, Daniel, and he changed your mind. I take it you were seriously injured that day, huh?” Pidgeot said to her brother, who nodded. “Yeah, I joined the team around the same time Venomoth did get injured from an Ursaring attack in the Illex Forest, a place I was hoping to be safe in *scoffs* What a fool I was then to think that.” Pidgeotto said as Pidgeot spoke up. “You know we were in the area as well. If we ran into you, would you still have that same issue, or would you have been unwilling to allow our help? I mean even with your medical expertise there’s only so much you could do for yourself, bro.” Pidgeot pressed her brother, who lowered his head shamefully. “Yeah, if you had offered to help me, stubborn as I was about you, I’m no fool not to accept the help. Sis, I’m sorry about a lot of things. I know that we went off topic so much during all this, but I needed to get that off my feathers since back at the Whirl Islands, we were pressed for time to get Charizard off the Island.” Pidgeotto said to his sister. She gestured that it was all good between them. “I understand that’s what you really wanted to say to me back then, bro, but shortened it that day. Look, no matter what our issues were, I harbor no hard feelings toward you, family or not. But returning to the topic…” Pidgeot said, hating to ruin the moment as the group knew this conversation had taken so many twists and turns that it would be good to wrap things up soon if possible. “Right now we’re gonna have to get more allies, whether it be from Johto or here in Kanto. If we’re not sent back to our trainers in the latter part of their journeys, we need to be proactive. Whether it be talking to Mary or asking Fearow’s main contact about helping us out, we have to do this quickly. I have a feeling that the other Council members may be spying on our progress as they learned about my doubts about the merger,” Pidgeot said to the group. This took aback both Skarmory and Pidgeotto, as this meeting now made sense why it was here and not one of the two flocks. “But that’s not possible. Yes, we had a discussion about it the day we came to check on you when you came back, though thinking back, that was in front of a lot of members of the flock. That means it could be anyone. What are we gonna do?” Pidgeotto said to the group as their uncle spoke up. “I don't know yet, but trust me, I just learned that little tidbit today, and I already have my suspicions about the rest of The Council even more. I may be a head council member, but not even I would go that far. I would want you and any of the flock to go out and do what you feel is right for you, the flock, and your Trainers. We are the sum of our parts. We can't blindly be all about the flock. There's a lot to learn, but it's only worth learning from time to time, not through spies. To do such things suggests something is off. I just have to figure out what. I promise you all, I will.” He finished as he turned to his nephew. “Did you learn anything from your mission given to you?” Pidgeotto nodded and turned to the group. “Yeah, I went to try to talk to members of dad’s contacts that The Council couldn’t reach here in Kanto, and I have good news and bad news. The good news is just like Mary, they’re willing to support the merger and help if needed with giving you support granted you continue proving yourself. The bad news is, however, is similar to what Skarmory mentioned with Mary, their wings are tied, and they can only do what they can and only do their own investigations into them as well but without going to our dad they are going to have to pull more strings and that might cause alarms. So right now we’ll have to hope for the best, sis.” Pidgeotto said to the group, as they were basically back to square one now. A well-informed square one, but square one, nonetheless. “However, there is one ally we have from the flock leaders we haven't heard from in some time, and uncle, you purposely sent me to Mt. Moon to find out about this.” Pidgeotto said to his uncle, who nodded. “Is this something I should be aware of?” Pidgeot was curious about what was going on before Pidgeotto spoke up. “You want me to tell her, or should you? Given that you hid this from me too, though I was happy to see who the Mon I was looking for ended up being.” Pideotto asked his uncle, who held back a chuckle. “You tell her. I think she should be happy to hear this news.” their uncle said, nodding and turning to Pidgeot. “One of the major members who is supporting you is the newest and current leader of the Mt. Moon Pidgeot flock… is our mother.” Pidgeotto said to his sister, who was surprised by this, as did Skarmory “Hold on, Pidgeotto. You mean to tell me she’s also a contact for our flock? Uncle Fearow never told me about her relationship with your flock.” Skarmory said, trying not to be upset. This bit of news was such a secret even from her, despite her relationship with her uncle. “That’s cause she just became the flock leader a couple of years ago. She’s been in contact with me as her sister's mate, and all I’ve been telling her about you is that you are our leader. Sadly, for now, she’s still new and wanted to see you, but right now she’s our biggest ally and something that The Council isn’t aware of. Only myself, Fearow, and you three. I felt like, with all the bad news going around, you should know about one of our biggest allies. I think this meeting should be ending soon, as sadly, the longer we are away, the more the Council members would start getting suspicious and well…” their uncle pointed out a member of Ash’s team, Ivysaur, coming their way. “Sorry to interrupt your conversation, but I came here to get Pidgeotto. His trainer is done with his time in the Whirl Islands and is calling for you as we speak.” Ivysaur said to Pidgeotto, who knew that he was going to return soon enough, and nodded. “Well, so much for resting back at Fearow’s flock. I’ll see you all back in Johto at some point, cause the next time we see each other will either be our Trainers bumping into each other or The Silver League Conference. Oh, and sis?” Pidgeotto said to Pidgeot, who turned to him. “I’ll inform the team and Daniel about Fearow’s contact, whoever that winds up being. We’ll try not to engage him and leave him to his dealing with whomever he's meeting. I hope to see you all soon, but if we battle, it’s out of our hands. I look forward to the challenge that battling either of you or your trainers’ mons will bring. No one of Dad’s contacts know who our father's mysterious contact is. For now, only Fearow knows, so we need to keep an eye out there on both our ends.” Pidgeotto said as the group agreed, and he added one last statement. “Until then, I'll see you all around, and uncle, I'll see you when the Johto Silver Conference is finished. Take care.” Pidgeotto said as he flew back to where Professor Oak was alongside Ivysaur. As Pidgeot looked down, she was now even more upset about what she had learned. Through all the good and bad, a lot of information was bombarded on her lap. Skarmory noticed, as did her uncle. Skarmory spoke up. “Hey, don’t let all of this get to you, Pidgeot. I’m here if you need someone to talk to. You know that you’re always welcome to my flock, no matter what. Rival or not. You’re my teammate and an ally. Take what I say to heart. You are stronger than you give yourself credit for.” Placing her heavy wing on Pidgeot to show solidarity. “I got to get back to the flock, you two, 'cause I have a feeling that they’ll be wondering where I’ve gone. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.” Getting ready to take off, she added one last statement. “If Ash needs us, I already have permission to leave the flock, regardless of whether my uncle is gone or not, so I’ll be in touch.” Skarmory said as the two nodded. She took one worried look at Pidgeot and took off, as Pidgeot’s uncle placed his wing on his niece. “There was something that your brother didn’t mention when he talked about the missing flock members from that day he encountered the poachers. We’ve gotten word from our other contacts across various regions that most are either now away with flocks of their own or are with trainers who are actually as nice as Ash. He's yet to properly forgive himself for what happened that day, but he knows that they are safe and sound for the most part. He carried so much guilt and stress because he felt he had to. I suggest you don't do the same." he said, trying to cheer Pidgeot up as she held a small smile, but she really needed to be by herself, as he noticed. “Well, I gotta let the flock and Council know that your brother went back to Johto. If you want to come back to the flock, it’s fine or stay here for the day, that’s fine as well. Just remember I’m here for you no matter what, dear. Take care, and don’t let this get to you.” her uncle said as she nodded slowly as he took off back to the flock. Pidgeot sighed before she went to check on Charizard to see how he was doing. When she arrived, she saw that his wing was starting to recover fully and no longer had the bent on it. She smiled at this. He had seemingly made a full recovery and had made so much progress when he noticed her and went to Pidgeot. “Hey Pidgeot, you came just in time. I was cleared now to fully fly again. I was about to go and see you, Pidgeot to see how you were doing. I heard about what happened with the merger. I wanted to give you some space and let you be until I fully recover. Are you okay?” Charizard said to her, trying to be nice, as Pidgeot looks down and shakes her head about all of this. “I really don’t know anymore, Charizard. I thought that being a flock leader would a bit easier than I thought it would be, but finding out that the flock that you have been running for almost two years and is the flock you’ve grown up with is now the flock that almost turned against you all cause of an issue that happened prior to me joining is a bit too much. I don’t know what to do anymore. Even with all the mentioning of allies and those who are willing to help me. I’m still at odds with my own ideals and how the flock really sees me as a leader.” Pidgeot said tearfully as Charizard listened. This was similar to when he was upset back at the Charizific Valley after learning Scar was the one who replaced him and all, but unlike Pidgeot, who had spoken to him and helped him, he knew better than to speak for the time being as Pidgeot was starting to cry and sob. “Now I am learning that even members of my own flock might be spying on me for The Council, calling my leadership into question, thinking that I’m not thinking for myself and rely heavily on others to do my thinking and going against my own fathers ideals and wishes when he built it by relying on listening to others and taking other options. And yet, I feel like they’re right. I don't think that I’m fit to be a leader, especially if no one is willing to listen to me and not brush me off like I’m lesser than any member of the flock. I…” Pidgeot was interrupted by Charizard, hugging her to calm her. He didn’t say anything; he just held her in his claws, comforting her as she cried into his chest. It was then she truly bellowed. She was carrying so much on her wings. As much as she listened, she was told to keep quiet, fearing what she'd say. THIS. This is what she needed. Silence and understanding. Someone to hear her doubts, her anger, her everything, and just listen. No advice on what to do. Nothing but accept what she said and not judge or have her be in fear that a moment of vulnerability could be used against her. Charizard’s warmth soothed her like no other feeling had before. She was safe. She was loved. She was just happy in that brief moment. It was a moment she never wanted to conclude & let her partner know it. “Charizard, thank you. Just please don’t let me go until I say you can, please…” Pidgeot said to Charizard, who nodded. He knew this was what she needed. “You have your teammates, no, you have your family, Pidgeot. You’ll prove them wrong. You helped me out, and you were there for me when I was sad. Now I’ll be here for you as well. You deserve that. Don't think you're alone in this. Rely on your teammates and your family. You got us, not your flock, and you’ll prove them wrong. I'll do anything I can to help you do so. I promise.” Charizard said, rubbing her mane on her head as she murred from it and spoke up. “You can let go now. And thank you, Charizard.” Pidgeot said. Pidgeot took what he said to heart, but there was no denying she'd be upset for some time. She let what he said help her confidence, so much so that she laid a peck on his cheek. A blush burned both their cheeks as the day came to an end. With a lot happening and so much information learned from past squabbles, failures, treachery, and even her mother's whereabouts, Pidgeot and her allies set their sights on not only proving their flocks wrong but also improving on things in due time. We will see the turmoil of today's events play out as the journey continues… Meanwhile, back on at the Whirl Islands. Zapdos has finished another stroll over the islands and still hasn't come up with anything. His patience was wearing thin. Were Team Rocket really in these islands, or had they moved on? As he was on the same rock back on the fourth island, he had a conversation with Lugia and Ho-oh not long ago. He heard someone behind him and took a defensive stance. “Show yourself already or else you’ll face my wrath.” Zapdos said to whoever was there. He knew that it wasn’t Lugia or her son Silver, cause they would’ve told him earlier, as a familiar voice for him spoke up. “Now, now is that anyway to greet an old friend who hasn’t spoken to you in almost 2 years, Zapdos? You really must be on edge lately." The voice called out to Zapdos was one he did not expect, and he was surprised to hear it was a Fearow. Yes, that Fearow indeed. “Been a while, old friend.” Wings stretched out to greet each other. Patting each other before Zapdos began to speak. “Yeah, it has, but I’m surprised that you are out here, Fearow. Aren’t you out of your territory, let alone region?” Zapdos said to Fearow, who chuckled. “I’d say the same to you, Zapdos, and you know I’m not isolated from the legendaries' boundary marks like you are, so I don’t need permission in the area.” Fearow said, walking towards him. He soon placed himself at enough distance to show the legend his proper respect and not to evoke his wrath for being too casual around the mighty embodiment of Thunder itself. Zapdos shook his head at the action, not in disapproval but rather amusement. It wasn't needed to be so formal, but it was appreciated nonetheless. “I’m here to make sure these Islands’ guardian and my godson/nephew are safe, given that there are rumors that Team Rocket is in the area, but we’ve come up with nothing to validate the threat. But no jokes. Tell me why you are here, Fearow, because while you aren’t bound to it, I still won’t hesitate to call Lugia to get you off the island if you waste my time. So you have your usual 20 minutes with me, Fearow. Any other length of time than that has to be worthy of it.” Zapdos said to his old friend, who let out a chuckle as he sighed, seeing his “highness” was still a real pain in the bum with his time and went straight to the point. Best to waste a second of his precious time if possible. “We just tried to do our merger recently. A few days ago, in fact, let's just say that it didn’t go well. Most of the flock turned on us. While things have died down since and we’re at peace, we are at a point where we need allies, especially for Pidgeot’s daughter. She's the one who is now running his flock and got the brunt of it. It wasn't deserved,” Fearow said to Zapdos, who was listening as Fearow continued. “I’m here in the region to contact my niece’s godmother, Mary. As well as staying with her flock for another day. Thankfully, it’s only an hour's flight from here. I’m trying to rally allies that can help Pidgeot’s daughter out. Though it seems many were already told about this situation and are choosing to remain at bay because of potential consequences from The Council.” Fearow finished as Zapdos spoke up. “I understand. I can see how that can be a burden, given that you were really excited to make this merger happen. I think it's because you originally helped form it with him and your sister in the hopes of uniting all the avians in your area of Kanto. It's a shame that it didn’t work out. Yet that doesn’t explain why you are here and why you came to me unannounced, Fearow. I value our friendship, but I would like to know what I have to do with any of this. Though you may be older than me, I’m not that Zapdos you’ve known since I was a kid. So is there a reason why you’re telling me this now?” Zapdos pressed him as Fearow sighed and knew what he was about to say and offer might either go well or make things worse for Ash and his Pokémon. “I came here with a proposition, Zapdos. During my meeting with Pidgeot, her uncle, Skarmory, who is my niece and their Trainer’s teammates, I proposed that you might be an ally to them shortly after the merger went wrong. Well…I was hoping you would be open to the idea of joining us as a member of both flocks, not just as a member but as an advisor to them.” Fearow said, leaving Zapdos surprised by this before he spoke up. “Are you sure that a legendary Pokémon like myself could serve as an advisor? Are you sure, Fearow? Because you know that’s not my territory, not to mention no one in either of these flocks knows about me. What's in it for me?” Zapdos said to Fearow, who reluctantly sighed. Why did he HAVE to gain something? He was a Legendary. What more was there to gain? “I can't really answer that. Right now, we need allies, and you’re one of the few that The Council wouldn't question who they support. I wouldn't promise you anything I couldn't deliver on. It's simple for now. I’m asking you for help. Pidgeot needs help as a leader to prove herself, and let's say that with a lack of allies, I'm focusing on the quality of allies rather than the quantity. We need to do something that can help shut The Council down, as they are going behind her back, Zapdos. Something foul is going on, and we need to try to prevent The Council from further risking what could, or better put, should be a beneficial merger for the flocks involved with some hidden agenda or unknown biases to have the status quo stay as is. I know you’ve had issues with humans, Zapdos. Arceus knows they've given you plenty of issues themselves, but I also know that you hate Pokémon who abuse the power they have. It can be just as bad or worse than many acts humans do if left unchecked. While Pidgeot and her team know I have a rather powerful contact, they don't know about you; they only know the bare minimum. As per our agreement, Zapdos. That way, they or anyone else would be out here in Johto searching for you.” Fearow said to his friend, who nodded in respect, then spoke up. “I actually wouldn’t have minded you telling them who I was, given that they’re allies to you, regardless of whether they’re human-trained Pokemon. I know that the boy named Ash is their trainer. He…intrigues me. I can't explain why, but there's something about him that makes me respect their attempting to search for me if they choose to. I’ll be in this region for another month or so as I have a few things to do. So if he tries to find me during that time, I won't make myself too difficult to find. Something tells me he felt my essence in the Whirl Cup tournament not long ago. Wait…is there something else you aren’t telling me, Fearow? I feel there is, or you would have told them more about me already.” Zapdos said to Fearow, who turned away, knowing that his friend was no fool and was going to catch up on this detail sooner rather than later. Zapdos realized where this was going. “Ash knows about me and that I was taken by evil humans, doesn't he?” Zapdos asked Fearow, who nodded and spoke up. “He has an idea of how bad things were. When he came to the flock during the day off of the Whirl Cup before the finals to check on everyone, he arrived to see the merger was to be and how the flock felt about all of this. He knows that it didn't go well. I kept it vague, but he knows my contact, you, do harbor a strong resistance…let's call it mildly toward humans. I warned him about your views on humans and how to approach you. I’m sure you saw how much Ash has changed during that match. Let’s just say that I also had a heart-to-heart talk with him about maturing. He understands that your issues are with bad humans, so he’ll be mindful of how he acts towards you. If he winds up finding out who you are, he'll understand why he’s going to have to earn your trust. I believe you can expect the same from Daniel, my godson's Trainer, but I would have him, like many to only know of your legend, not of you personally.” Fearow said to Zapdos, who closed his eyes. A lot of things were now starting to make sense. “I’ll think about it, Fearow. However that doesn’t mean I’ll agree to it right away. Ash has to earn my respect a lot more now. However, I won’t hesitate to be an ally if I’m in the area for the time being for you and his Pidgeot, but I do have some terms. For one, she’s going to have to earn my trust if she wants me to be a member of her flock. She'll have to perform an act of valor that merits my support, like her father and you did, Fearow. I know that I’m their last resort, but mind you, I’m a wild card here. I might not be available when summoned due to my responsibilities, but I will certainly try to be. You know that few common avians hold my trust and respect, and in rare instances, my friendship. Should things go well, Pidgeot will be among those select few, but she will have to earn it.” Zapdos said to Fearow, who nodded as he knew the risk by even just asking him this but had to try. He was glad he did. “If you feel you've made your decision within the next couple of days, I’ll be in the Mt. Mortar area for another day and in Violet City for another before I head back to the Viridian Forest. Let me know when you're ready. I appreciate your time and candor. It was good to see you again, Zapdos and please take care.” Fearow said to Zapdos, who gave a simple bow of the head. “I will do that, Fearow. It was good seeing you, too. Take care,” Zapdos said as he saw Fearow taking off. He smiled as he thought about all this. ‘Me as an advisor for not one but two flocks. That's something I haven’t thought about. If it were just you and Pidgeot, I probably would have said yes immediately; however, this whole matter involves Ash, indirectly or not, for any support of mine on that merger will have to be earned, my old friend.’ Zapdos gave his final thought. He was unaware someone's eyes were upon him with vested interest in his next move. Their identity to be revealed in due time… Stay Tuned.
