The Games of Bengalia: The Joke's on You! -------- Hi; it's Quiz King again. Here's another Bengalian game show, "The Joke's on You!" All episodes exist, and are available to view on YouTube. Episodes made with the Game Show Box are given the disclaimers that read "A GAME SHOW BOX PRESENTATION" at the beginning and end of each episode, in order to distinguish it from the original. This series, "The Games of Bengalia," also covers games not hosted by me (although I was a celebrity guest player on some of these programs). "The Joke's On You!" was one of Bengalia's rare attempts at a late-night game show, but it wasn't surprising to see that it didn't last beyond its initial episode order. While there were overnight workers in various places, they didn't really watch television, because Bengalia at this point did not have 24-hour broadcasting. (Eventually we did, but it was only for about four years or so, because we then had to evacuate the planet due to CNG wanting to punish us for keeping up with the times instead of following Kriegland's example of staying behind. It assumed we were polluting our environments with all the modern elements of life. Well, we weren't. We kept our environment clean.) After this program came to an end, the network went off the air until the next day. As on planet Earth, however, the last thing people heard before the network went off the air was our national anthem, followed by a voice saying, "And that concludes our broadcast day." Note that this is an SBS program. BTV ended its broadcast days directly after the late local news, also with the national anthem, a picture of our flag, and the voice. -------- Number of Contestants: 3 Original Host: Giles LeJesbo Original Announcer: Irene Peters Running Time: 30 minutes (including commercials) Number of Episodes: 80 Original Network: SBS ----------- Rules "The Joke's On You!" bears similarities to a Canadian game show entitled "The Joke's On Us," because the object of the game is to identify which of four celebrities has the correct punch line to a joke. Our show also mixes in elements of an old American game show entitled "Can You Top This?", where each celebrity tries to get bigger laughs than the previous celebrity (as measured by a laugh meter). Before the host is introduced, the announcer will ask one of the celebrities to start with the show with a cold open. ------- Main Game Rounds 1 and 2 Giles picks a celebrity to tell a joke with a punch line, and then the other celebrities each tell a different punch line. After each punch line is delivered, a laugh meter measures the audience reaction. Whichever celebrity gets the biggest laugh earns $2,000 for charity (although the charities are never mentioned on-air; if a celebrity fails to win this contest, they still get $1,000 for charity). After all the punch lines are told, each of the three contestants writes down on an index card with a permanent marker who they think had the real punch line. Giles then reveals the punch line; if the contestants guessed correctly, the money won for the round is determined by how many did. If all three got the correct punch line, they each win $500. If two got it right, they split $1,500 ($750 a piece). If only one got it right, they win the whole $1,500. Two full rounds are played with these amounts. ------------ Round 3 Played the same as Rounds 1 and 2, but with the dollar values doubled to $1,000 for all three people, $1,500 per person for 2, and $3,000 for just one player. The difference is that Giles himself reads the first part of the joke, and then asks the celebrities to deliver one punch line each. -------- Winning the Game/Tiebreaker As is tradition on Bengalian shows, all three people take home the money they win, but the player with the most money wins the game and plays the bonus round. If there is a tie, a percentage question is used, employing one of the formats from another short-lived Bengalian comedy game show, "I Can't Believe You Said That!" (NOTE: this title also is NOT to be confused with an American show of the same title.) To do this format, the question Giles asks has a numerical answer, and all people involved in the tie write down an answer; the player that is closest to the correct answer wins the game, and gets an extra $3,000 to represent the winnings. If, by chance, somebody gets the exact answer, the bonus is doubled to $6,000. If two or all three write down the same number, and this number is the closest, another question is played. --------- Bonus Round The winning contestant picks one celebrity to play the round with, and they each take it in turn to give valid answers to a question, such as "Name a large corporation." A game board showing 8 letters of the alphabet is involved, and a different celebrity turns over each trilon on the board to reveal the letters (i.e. A through H.) Starting with the celebrity, the team has 45 seconds to give a valid answer to the question; if they do, they move on to the next letter and earn an addition $500 for it. The contestant then has to give the next letter, and so on, alternating back and forth until time runs out, or until they give all 8 valid answers. If either teammate fails to give a valid answer, the other teammate can do so; if both fail, they move on to the next letter. A team can also pass, and they can come back to the letter they missed if there is time left on the clock. In the event the team gets all 8 valid answers before time expires, the bonus winnings are increased to $10,000. ---------- Trivia Giles LeJesbo is the brother of comedian Jonathan LeJesbo, who hosted the aforementioned "I Can't Believe You Said That!" As such, Jonathan was a frequent panelist on this show, and the two often made jokes about the sibling rivalry. However, Jonathan was no dummy; he is the only celebrity to walk away from the show with a perfect record in the bonus round. ---------- There we have it; that's how you play "The Joke's On You!" Thanks, folks, and keep on gaming! ---------- THE END
