Bernadette Hedgehog took a right on Fulop Street. The trunk of the car had been loaded earlier that morning with her clothes and other things she'd need. Her husband Jules, having been converted into a robotic state by his brother years ago, didn't need much in the way of sun protection and clothes. "You know, Bernie," said Jules, "I almost feel guilty about this vacation." "Don't be," said his wife. "We all need a change of scenery every now and then. Besides, Sonic loves going over to Vanilla's." The car reached a stop sign, allowing Bernie to look both ways before advancing. But a grunting sound caught her ears, making her look over her shoulder. Buckled up in the back was a younger Hedgehog in a booster seat, with an empty baby bottle at his feet and a Huggies Snug & Dry diaper around his waist. He was scrunching up a little, cluing Bernie in on what was going on. "You know Jules," said Bernie, partially rolling down her window for the inevitable, "I almost envy Chuck's method of saving you life back in the war. You can't smell potty accidents." "Yeah," Jules chuckled, "but having a kid like Sonic's worth it." "Amen to that," Bernie said with a smile. Vanilla the Rabbit stood at the kitchen sink and washed dishes, while Cheese and Chocola dried them and put them away. The occasional clank of metal could be heard from behind them. Little Cream was playing with some pots and pans strewn around her. The doorbell buzzed. The motherly Rabbit stopped what she was doing to answer it. Standing on the stoop were Jules and Bernie Hedgehog and their son Sonic, piggybacking on the Robian's shoulders. "Hey, Vanilla," said Bernie, "thank you again for agreeing to look after Sonic." "It's nothing, Bernie," said Vanilla. Her nose was quick to pick up something. Jules felt just slightly awkward about stating what Vanilla had already discovered, but it was her house after all, "Um, on the way over here," he said, "Sonic... well, you know..." Vanilla giggled lightly. "Don't worry about it, Jules. You can take him to Cream's nursery and change him there." "Let me bring his stuff in, too," Bernie said as they started to go in. Sonic was escorted to Cream's room by Bernie and Vanilla. He was laid out on the changing table and Bernie went to work. It was just a number two accident; he hadn't wet it. He was also in a chill mood at the time, no kicking, wiggling, or general goofing about like little kids often do when their diapers get changed. Sonic wasn't different in that regard, but right now it was getting close to naptime. "Mrs. Bernie?" a little voice called from the doorway. It was Cream, sporting a bubble gum pink shirt and Sesame Street-themed Pampers. "Hey, Cream," the Hedgehog mother greeted. "Sonic's going to be staying with you and your Mama this week, while Mr. Jules and I are out of town." She finished taping Sonic into a clean Mickey Mouse Huggies much like the one he'd just used and tossed the old one into Cream's bin. Sonic was placed on his feet now that he had a new diaper on. Bernie got down to his eye-level and spoke gently. "Now be a good boy for Ms. Vanilla," she told her son, "we'll be back Sunday." Sonic yawned and agreed to the terms. "Okay, Mom." "I think somebody's ready for a nap," Bernie noted. Vanilla concurred. She soon noticed Cream toddling toward her from the bookcase next to her toy box, holding a thick hardback book. The little bunny held it out toward her mother with a big smile. "Seems Cream wants in on it, too," said Bernie. "I can go ahead and put them down for their nap if you're about to leave," Vanilla offered. "Go ahead," said Jules, "we're all set." Sonic gave his parents a hug and he was given a kiss on the cheek by Bernie. Within a moment, the two Hedgehogs had stepped out the door; in another, the car would be cranked up and they'd be on their vacation. Vanilla lowered the bars on Cream's crib and laid her daughter and Sonic inside it, side by side. Secured within its tall sides and snuggly tucked under a blanket, the elder Rabbit stepped out of the nursery and came back with two baby bottles of milk. The children began to suckle on their drinks as Vanilla brought a chair to the side of the crib. The duo watched intently as she cracked the book open and started to read. She began to read the two kids a story about a Hedgehog knight who lived back in olden times. He was raised by his uncle, who was also caring for a Human teenager who was aspiring to become a wizard. The human boy ran away from home and came back a powerful warlock eight years later, who took over the kingdom, made awful laws robbing the land of fun, and turned many people into monsters-including the hero's uncle! The gallant Hedgehog fought the evil sorcerer, obtaining six magic gems to aid him in the process, and saved the kingdom. When Vanilla looked up from her reading, she found the two kids asleep. Whether they had nodded off during the hero's journey through the lava-filled catacombs, the struggle in the flooded ruins, or the climactic assault on the castle, Vanilla didn't know... but the sight of Cream, cuddled up against her equally-conked-out playmate with a thumb in her mouth was too cute. She made soft steps to the curtain and closed it to shield the twosome from the afternoon sun. Finally, she whipped out her phone, snapped a picture of the precious sight, and texted it to Bernie's phone; as far as Vanilla knew, she was behind the wheel right now, but she would see it eventually. The accompanying message read: "I couldn't let a sight like this slip by."
