Max and Ruby: Ruby's Slumber Party

This morning Ruby was just finishing getting dressed, when Max knocked outside her door. It had taken Ruby a lot of effort to teach Max not to barge into her room and knock first before entering. "You can come in Max, I'm done dressing" Ruby said. Max opened the door and came in wearing his daily clothes, but he was carrying his striped PJs. "What is it Max?" Ruby asked looking at the PJs he was carrying. Max unfolded his PJ trousers and Ruby noticed a dark stain on them. "Wet bed" Max replied as Ruby blinked. "Oh that's not good Max, waking up in a wet bed" she told him "Let's have some breakfast and we'll see what we can do".

Downstairs in the kitchen Max ate his bowl of Chocolate Pretzelies cereal, while Ruby spread some peanut butter on toast for herself. "Max, is this the first time you had an accident?" Ruby asked concerned. Max shook his head and put a spoonful in his mouth. "How many nights has this happened?" Ruby asked him. Max raised three fingers on his hand. "Three nights?" Ruby asked shocked. Ruby headed to the upstairs bathroom and saw in the laundry basket Max's striped PJs, birthday cake PJs and Halloween PJs all with wet stains on them. Ruby went to Max's bedroom and saw a large spreading dark patch on his sheet. Ruby went back downstairs, sat down at the kitchen table and asked Max "Why didn't you tell me sooner Max?". Max shrugged and simply said "Wet bed". "I know. The bed is such a mess" Ruby said and sighed "We really need to do something about it. You just can't continue like that". Max nodded and finished his last spoonful of cereal.

While Max was looked after by Mrs. Huffington, Ruby went to Mr. Piazza's Store for some essential supplies. She got a box of wet wipes, a packet of sponges, a tub of rash cream and last but not least a package of Bunnynites Pajama Pants Ages 3-7. Ruby brought those items to the counter. "Good morning Ruby" Mr. Piazza greeted and he began to scan the items. He was a little surprised by the choice of items Ruby had, but he asked no questions and Ruby said nothing. As Ruby paid for the items, the shop door opened and in came the old bunny in a purple and green tartan dress and triangle glasses with her nine little nieces and nephews following closely. Ruby just gave a friendly wave and left the store, carrying the items in a brown paper shopping bag. Along the way home, Ruby collected Max from Mrs. Huffington.

Back at home, Ruby changed the sheets on Max's bed and laid out a protective plastic sheet to avoid more wet sheets. Downstairs in the kitchen, Ruby saw Max drinking a glass of milk. "Max" she told him "Don't drink too much. That would make you wet the bed again". "Wet bed?" Max asked. "That's right" replied Ruby "Just go easy on what you drink and take small sips". For the remainder of the day, Ruby finished with washing Max's PJs and sheets and finally prepared dinner. They had carrot soup with mushrooms and peas. Ruby made sure that Max had only one glass of fruit juice to drink. Then it was time for Max and Ruby's bedtimes. "Come Max let's get ready for bed" Ruby told Max. Max yawned, took Ruby's hand and they both walked upstairs to the bathroom.

After their usual routines of brushing their teeth and washing their faces, Ruby ushered Max to sit down on the stool. "Now Max, you will need to wear one of these so you'll have a dry night" Ruby said to him. She fetched the package of Bunnynites on top of the laundry basket, ripped it open and took out one of the pajama pants. It was a frilly pair of sky blue pants with pictures of bunny heads and carrots on them. "Diaper?" Max asked backing away. "No Max" said Ruby "It's not a diaper, it's a pair of pajama pants. It will help you cope with those accidents in bed". "Diaper!" Max said shrugging. "No it's not" said Ruby flipping Max's overalls off. Max began to run away from the bathroom and straight into Ruby's bedroom. Ruby followed him and saw the right sleeve of Max's shirt under her bed "I know you're under the bed Max, come on out" Ruby cooed. But Max had taken his shirt off and as Ruby bent down to get Max out, Max quietly slipped away without any clothes on him. Max hid in the bathroom where he was sure Ruby wouldn't look first, while Ruby realised she had been tricked. Ruby went out to look for Max. "Come on Max" she called "It's for your own good". She was about to go downstairs to find Max, but she noticed from the corner of her eye a shadow under the bathroom door. "Oh Max you sneaky fella" she said opening the door. Max jumped seeing Ruby had already found him and backed into a corner. "No diaper" Max protested crossing his arms. "For the last time Max, it is not a diaper" Ruby said and she held it up and unfolded it "Look it's all soft and fluffy". Max shook his head unwillingly to cooperate. "Tell you what Max, if I put one on, will you wear one too?". Max smiled and then looked at Ruby with uncertainty. "It's just like a pair of underpants" Ruby said taking off her clothes "You can slip it off anytime you need to use the bathroom". Ruby put on the pair of Bunnynites. It did feel soft and fluffy as she said and it felt good wearing it. "Okay Ruby" Max said stepping forward and allowing Ruby to give him another pair of Bunnynites. Max slipped it on himself and smiled. "There it's not so bad is it?" Ruby asked Max adjusting his pants straight and snugly. Max shook his head. Ruby put on her pajamas and took Max to his bedroom. "I've washed all your PJs Max" Ruby told him. She opened his drawer and asked "Which would you like to wear?". Max pointed to his dark blue PJs with golden planets and rockets. "Your outer space PJs it is" said Ruby handing them to Max. Max put his PJs on and got into bed. The bed crinkled as he got in and Max blinked puzzled. "Oh that's a protective sheet in case the Bunnynites are not enough" Ruby told him. Max lay down and pulled the blanket towards him. "Good night Max and stay dry" said Ruby tucking him in. "Good night Ruby" Max said. With that, Max lay down on his pillow and Ruby left for her own bedroom. "Mmm these Bunnynites are lovely and comfy" Ruby said to herself as she got into bed. Then she put out the light and lay down on her pillow.

Next morning Max got up and went to Ruby's room. Ruby was starting to get up, when she heard Max knocking on her door. "Come in Max, I'm getting up" Ruby said in a sleepy voice. Max opened the door and went towards Ruby's bed. "So Max did you manage to stay dry?" Ruby asked him. Max pulled down his PJ bottoms and Ruby saw the pictures on the Bunnynites were a little faded in tiny spots but otherwise intact. "Not bad Max" Ruby told him and she got out of the bed "Less drinks did the trick. We'll sort this out and…". Ruby cut off as she heard a squishing sound as she sat. Ruby lifted up her pajama skirt hem and gasped as she saw the pictures on her Bunnynites were heavily faded and blotchy. "Wet bed?" Max asked her. "No, not a wet bed" Ruby replied sounding worried "I wonder what caused that. I think I definitely need Bunnynites as much as you do Max". Max didn't respond and he went to the bathroom. He took off his PJs, ripped off the Bunnynites he had on and dumped it into the bathroom bin. Max rubbed himself with a wet wipe from the box on the dressing table and put on his usual clothes. As Max went downstairs to have some breakfast, Ruby went to clean herself up and plan on how to stay dry in future.

Louise and Valerie soon woke up from their refreshing nap, stretching their arms. "Oh! That was a relaxing nap Louise" Valerie said adjusting her glasses. "Now where did Ruby and Max go?" Louise asked turning her head around. They peered outside Ruby's door and heard the clinking of dishes being washed downstairs. "Oh they're still here" said Louise "Let's join them". "I'll be with you in a moment" Valerie said going into the bathroom. Downstairs in the kitchen Louise was eating some of the last few cheese on crackers snacks for the pajama party. "I'll save some for Valerie" Louise declared. Max busily played with his fire truck. "I was wondering Ruby, would it be okay if me and Valerie had a sleepover tonight?" Louise asked. "Why of course you can" said Ruby. "Slumber party" Max said in excitement. "Yes you can join us if you want Max" Ruby told him.

Shortly Valerie came down and joined the others at the kitchen table. "Snacks, oh thank you Ruby" Valerie said taking one. "So how was the pajama party?" Ruby asked. "It was great" answered Louise. "Max made it exciting" said Valerie "But there's one thing I want to ask". "Ask away" said Ruby. "I couldn't help but notice. Who needs Bunnynites in this house?" Valerie asked. "Oh!" Ruby said surprised and explained "Those are for Max. He's…wet the bed for three nights". "That's unfortunate" said Louise "My cousin Morris wears them every night". "And two years ago, I used to wear them quite frequently" said Valerie. "I've been trying to cut down on the drinks for Max" said Ruby "Do you have any ideas on how to help him?". "Well one drink you'll definitely want to cut down on is lemonade" said Louise "That stuff got me getting up all night when I drank a whole jug in one day". Ruby fetched a notepad and took notes as Valerie added "You may also want to cut down on fizzy drinks. The caffeine inside is quite a mouthful". "I've heard that dandelions could cause such trouble for little bunnies" said Ruby not quite sure "Is it true?". "Let's check the Bunny Scouts Guidebook" Valerie suggested. "Great idea" said Ruby, and she went to the living room and got her copy off the left end of the bookshelf. Back in the kitchen Ruby laid down the guidebook on the table and flipped through the pages. "Now let's see" she said to herself "Category Plants, Section Flowers, Family Sunflower". "Ah! This is it" said Louise pointing to the correct pages showing a yellow flower and a white flower. "It says here that dandelions can cause urinary urge buildups upon close contact" Louise paraphrased. "Thank you so much" said Ruby. "Anytime Ruby" said Valerie. "That information will help me have a dry night…" said Ruby before she realised what she just said and stopped. "Do you mean to tell us you need the Bunnynites too?" Valerie asked. "Uh…It just happened last night, I don't know why" Ruby explained "But I put on a Bunnynite to get Max to wear one and then next morning I kinda used the Bunnynite". "Gosh! So suddenly?" said Louise surprised. "Could we keep this just between us?" Ruby asked. "Your secret is safe!" Louise and Valerie chanted together.

For the rest of the day, Ruby and her friends and of course Max played some games, had dinner and went upstairs to the bathroom ready for bedtime. Ruby took care to follow the notes she had written down to avoid future accidents. Max took a pair of Bunnynites from the open package, slipped it on himself and put on his High Flyer PJs. "All ready for bed Max?" Ruby asked him. Max nodded then took another pair of Bunnynites and handed it to Ruby. "Thanks Max" she told him. But then Max had an idea and took two more pairs of Bunnynites and handed one to Louise and the other to Valerie. They stood stunned and Valerie asked "You want us to wear those?". "We don't need them" Louise said. "Slumber party" Max said. "I must admit to you" Ruby said to her two friends "I sort of like wearing those Bunnynites". "You do?" Louise asked in surprise, then curiosity overwhelmed her and she slipped on the pair she was holding. "Aah, that feels comfy" said Louise smiling. Valerie was prompted by this to put on the pair she was holding and she agreed "It does. I love it too".

Soon the girls and Max were in Ruby's bedroom. Ruby came in with three sleeping bags. "All ready for the slumber party" said Ruby. "All ready and cosy" replied Louise. Max took a sleeping bag and lay down in it. "Which one of us is going to sleep on the bed Ruby?" Valerie asked. Ruby sorted this out with a game of One Potato, Two Potato and Louise won. As Louise climbed into the bed, she heard a rustling of plastic. "Huh? What's this?" she asked. Ruby moved nearer and examined the bed and saw a bed sheet of plastic on her bed. "Max, was it you who put that sheet here?" Ruby asked him. Max nodded and pulled the hem of his sleeping bag towards him. "Makes this bed twice as cosy" Louise said yawning. The girls and Max settled in comfort and soon fell asleep.

The next morning all four bunnies woke up. "Slumber party" Max said remembering where he was and the girls next to him. "Good morning" Louise said stretching her arms and climbing out of bed. The rustling of the plastic sheet reminded her "Oh! Did everyone have a dry night?". They all checked their Bunnynites and to both Max and Ruby's surprise and joy, their Bunnynites were completely dry as the pictures on them were intact. "Dry bed" Max said beaming. "Bunnynites do feel real snug" commented Louise. "Especially if they stay dry" Valerie added. "We oughtta to do this again" Louise said. "I would be happy to wear Bunnynites for every…" Ruby started. "Slumber Party" Max cut off.
