Save the Day by D.J. Fahl Found at FurPlanet http://furplanet.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid=437 Let's start with the obvious, shall we? Save the Day is a novel about superheroes. It is also a novel about gay relationships. Bearing this in mind, it's not really a spoiler to say that the main character (or one of them) is in a gay relationship and reveals to his partner and eventually his fellow crime fighters. The gay relationship theme is kind of cliche, but hey, it is relevant to a lot of people and weaved into the story pretty well. So let's get down to the nitty-gritty. IS IT FURRY? Yes. HOW FURRY IS IT? If a furry book is to be furry, it should be reasonably expected that the book has a reason to be furry, in that the characters have a reason to be furry aside from it's cute/hot. Do his credit, DJ Fahl weaves furry into his world, though there are some minor characters that do seem like they have a fur coat rather than any defining characteristic. Also, there are a lot of canines among the cast. Foxes, wolves, and various breeds of dog dominate. STORY There are essentially two reveals in the story. One is gotten out of the way in the first chapter; [minor spoiler] Ted reveals to his boyfriend of five years Jay that he is, in fact, Star Coyote, the hero of Portland. [/minor spoiler] The other reveal, Ted coming out, takes considerably longer and is more tied to Ted's history. You get to see how this works out in Ted's mind as well as Jay's as the story is told through both of their first person perspectives. Being as this is a superhero novel as well, there is lots of big fights and punching and super powers and what not, exemplified in the awesome reveal and the truly exemplary climax. However, getting to the climax was a bit trying for me at times because the character seemed to do a lot more explaining than was strictly necessary sometimes, leading to a bit of an info dump and the story grinding to a halt. I really do like how media is used in the story, reflecting how superheroes would no doubt be exemplified and vilified. One thing I have to call attention to is that the text seems like it could benefit from another editing pass. There are some way obvious errors in there. If it was one or two, then it wouldn't be much of an issue, but there are at least seven or eight and they jarred me out of the story. Gotta clean those up, guys. CHARACTERS The characters were generally well rounded, if a little unremarkable. Ted and Jay carry the story for the most part except in those info dump portions. Gary is an absolute fruit, and I think I liked him the most. OVERALL Save the Day is a pretty solid story. It stalls sometimes, but the climaxes are well worth having to slog through the story. I will heartily recommend it.
