Ynk’s first day Ynk had been so excited that he had trouble falling asleep last night. But he was also so excited that he woke on hour before his first class. He quietly went to his cupboard, careful not to wake up his roommate, a nice male mouse with a brown fur and grey eyes, called Clirk Owoy. He was around half the fogecoon size and was pretty thin but man, did he pack some mind. Clirk had blown Ynk’s mind last night when they discussed about their powers. He had the power to manipulate the molecule of a non-organic object to change them into anything he wanted! And he used 30 minutes trying to explain Ynk how he could feel all the molecules moving how he wanted, disassembling and reassembling to create what he needed… Like transforming a pen into paper… or a blanket into a large and comfy pillow and a small pillow into a little blanket, like he had done that night –even though powers shouldn’t be used in the dormitory. Having now his clothes –a grey hoodie and light blue jeans, underwear and a dark blue t-shirt- the fogecoon tiptoed out of the room. Walking across the long hall, he entered one of the four bathrooms of the dormitory; two were on the main floor and two more on the first floor. The water was magically heated, so it practically never ran out. Ynk didn’t really liked to shower in the morning, preferring to wake up at his own rate, but he hadn’t showered last night so he really had to do it now. He waited until the water was nice and warm before getting under it. He moaned once it hit his furry and quickly washed, making sure to get his white fur all clean. Sometime, he wished he had red/orange fur, like other foxes because white fur got dirty rather easily. Once he washed all the soap and shampoo, grabbed his first towel and dried his fur the best he could. Then, once he was satisfied with that, he grabbed the second one and worked on his tail. He had noticed that when he used his magic with his tail wet, the power was cut in half. And the staff he created that time was all flabby, like made of rubber; funny but not very cool or useful. It took him 15 minutes to be completely dry, body and tail. After being sure of it, he put on his clothes. Done that, he quickly went back to his room, grabbed the back bag he used when he went to train, put in a note book, a pencil and a pen. Clirck was awake when Ynk came back from his shower but liked his pillow so much, he decided to stay in until he need to get up and go to class. 15 minutes later, Ynk was in his class room he had been indicated for Theory and Practice of Magic. The room was filled and all the desks occupied. There were around 30 of first year students. As the bell rang, the teacher entered. It was an old looking owl with greyish feather and glasses on his beak and a large brown cloak on him. His wings were crossed behind him, like arms. “Mmmh… So many of you this year, there are… Ow Long, my name is.” he said an old yet strong voice, his gaze scanning every student. “Great power, all of you have. But train and focus you must, if among the greatest you want to be.” Several students look at each other: that speech construction was familiar… A piece of white chalk started to float and to write at fast pace on the blackboard. Words like ‘mana’, ‘chakra’, ‘ether’, life-force’, ‘magic’, ‘chi’ and some others are being written down in two different columns. “The difference between ‘chi’ and ‘mana’, hard to tell is sometime. One thing mainly, you must remember: from the inside, the chi is, but all around mana is.” Above the columns, the chalk wrote ‘out’ above the words ‘mana’, ‘ether’ and some more, and ‘in’ above ‘charka’, ‘chi’, ‘ki’ and the rest. “Many names, those energies have, but in the end, only two there are. ‘Mana’ and ‘ki’, we’ll call them. ” As he spoke, the students took quick notes of that; some did with only words, others with little drawing added. “The body, the ki usually strengthen; the power, out is brought by the mana. The power using the ki, it may happen.” “How can we say the difference between them, sir?” asked a coyote with grey fur and blueish locks of fur. “What power you have tell me, mr Tee.” answered the old teacher. “Well, I can turn my body into gelatin/slime and take any form I wish.” “Then ki, your power uses. Ki the body affects, and the world around, mana affects.” “I can manipulate molecules…” tried Clirk, Ynk’s roommate. “Then mana, your power uses.” At this point, the students muttered, either between them or by themselves, trying to pinpoint if they power used ki or mana. Using his telekinesis, Ow Long made the chalk hit he blackboard until the silence came back. And the lesson resumed; the owl explained on what they’ll work on during the year: the origin of mana and ki, how the body uses those energies, how they can apply in everyday life… and the excises they’ll do, the meditation, the physical training… After two hours, the students left the class room and headed to the next one: Laws. Here, a vulture wearing a suit was waiting for them. “Welcome to all of you. My name is Alex VanVult and will teach you what you can and cannot do out there with your power.” This brought surprise from everyone. They all knew they shouldn’t hurt people… “I know what you’re thinking but it’s more complicated than that. You need to understand that even if you have those powers, it doesn’t make you superheroes. You can’t go running into building like you’re a police officer. The laws apply even to you.” This made some of the students ponder: since they discovered their power, they always imagined themselves like Superfur, or even the Furtastic Four or even like the Furry League of Justice, making respect the law but still above it. “We have only two hours per week so let’s start… You!” suddenly exclaimed VanVult pointing at Ynk, making in jump in surprise, “What would you do if you saw a bank being robbed?” “W-well… I’ll… I guess I’ll call the cops… then try to slow down or stop robbers or help the cops to find them if they ran away…” tried Ynk. “Half right! Helping to capture or slow down the robbers are good ideas, but if you act against them, you might be arrested for violence.” corrected the teacher. “What?! Even if we stop some bad dudes, we get arrested!?” yelled a wolf, standing up suddenly. “Unless you’re have a special license that allow you to do so, or are a cop, you could get apprehended yourself, yes.” “But… that’s so unfair!” whined the wolf, sitting down. The vulture chuckled and the lesson continued for a full hour, but only half the class really was interested in that one. Ynk noted the most important points, which would avoid him being arrested or such troubles but all in all, he didn’t really liked law. Next lesson was languages. The teacher was a beautiful shark lady, dressing with a dark business suit. “Good morning class. I’m Ark Sha, your Language teacher for this year.” she said, sitting on the desk, her long and smooth legs crossed. Several boys couldn’t help but focus more on the legs to what the shark lady was saying. The teacher then muttered a world that no one could understand and the boys who were ogling her had their chair vanish from under their furry butt, falling on the floor. “HAHAHA!!” the students who still had their chair laughed loudly, even the teacher had a little giggle. “Now, if I have those gentlemen’s attention…” said Ark Sha after the students calmed down and were all sat, “What you will study with me is the different languages on our planet. Both modern and ancient. Normal and magical.” A student raised her hand, “Miss Sha, is that how you did the chair vanish?” Nodding, the shark answered, “Indeed. My magic, or power, is to bring power to words, but those words must be said in a particular ancient language, passed in my family for hundreds of years.” The students were in awe. “But enough of this. Let’s start the lesson…” turning back, grabbed a remote and pushed a button. A wide white screen came down and an image was projected on it. The image was the one of their planet with five lines, pointing at five different locations. Each line had the name of a language wrote above it. “As you can see, our world have five main languages. All of them have some variations depending on where the habitants live. In the first semester, we’ll learn the basics of the four other languages.” Pressing another button, the image switched to several words in a foreign language and their traduction, “Now, repeat after me…” For two hours, the students learned the basics words of others languages, words you find in every conversation, such as “hello”, “my name is…”, “I live in…”, and the basic grammar of those as well. Ynk really had lot of fun, especially because two of those languages had some weird, funny accent! While talking with Clirk on the way to the last class, he imitated those accents a few time while speaking. Last class was Physical Education. Ynk remembered the buffy zebra who gave him his card the day before and wonder what kind of training they were gonna do. When they reached the gymnasium, the students’ gaped. The place was freaking huge!! The whole dormitory would fit in it!! Well, maybe not all but at least half of it! “Alright maggots!” screamed a powerful voice behind them, making them jump. They all turned and saw… nothing… What the- “Line up maggots!! We haven’t got all day!” screamed the voice again. This time, when they turned, they noticed the muscled zebra, wearing a yellow sleeveless shirt and military like short pants. They moved up quickly and lined, feeling a bit silly to do so but when a zebra twice your size and with arms three times bigger than your own, Ynk figured it was good to obey. And she was a teacher too. The Zebh Uhra stared to walk back and forth the line of students, “Listen up, boys and girls! My name is Zebh Uhra! Today, I will test you. I prepared a classic obstacle course to measure your physical abilities. How fast you are, how agile, how strong, how flexible… Your body and your mental will be pushed to their limits!” Several students gulped down… with some difficulties. “Now, go change! You have your special P.E. suit in the lockers. Just say your name in front of one! Move it!!” The students ran to the changing rooms. Ynk was one of the first to enter and he got in front of the first locker. “Err… Ynk Lamia?” he tried. The looked shook for a few seconds before opening suddenly, almost slamming into Ynk’s face. A brand new gym suit was inside, neatly folded. A sleeveless black T-shirt with the logo of the school in yellow ochre and red tiger’s like stripes on the sides; black pants with similar features and a track top, again with the red stripes and the logo. In a little more than 5 minutes, every student was standing again before the zebra. “You look good, maggots! Now let’s move! Follow me! One, two, oh! One, two, oh!” counted the teacher, exiting the gymnasium in a slow pace, the students running behind her. They went behind the gymnasium and then, the students mentally groaned, some prayed, some just blinked… Ynk was among the last ones. The course looked really challenging. First a low wall, then stepping stones, then a combination of low walls and bars –making you go up and down-, then tunnels –Clirk would have easy time, being the smallest in the class, the giraffe though… - then a ladder which you had to climb and go back down on the other side, then a horizontal ladder, three meters above ground, then a apex ladder, then a balancing bridge, three meters above ground as well, then low rope you had to climb to make a bell ring. Zebh Uhra was smirking evilly, as she held a stop watch, a paper with the students’ names on it and a whistle. “Ok maggots! Let’s get started!” 1 hour later, they were all done and dead. She had made them repeat the whole course as many time as possible, Ynk managing to do it three times before the bell rang. All in all, he was satisfied with his time: 1 minute and 15 seconds had been his best. However, the best of the class had been a cheetah, managing it all in 1 minute sharp! Clirk had been pretty good too, giving his handicap on the horizontal ladder: 1 minute and 30 seconds. However, the worse one ad been a bear a little too chubby: 3 minutes and 5 seconds. “Alright maggots! I’m very pleased with your first day! Go shower and back to your dorm! Today’s classes are done!” and the zebra jogged away. Groaning, the students walked back to the changing rooms where they all took a nice and hot shower. Stretching under the water, Ynk sighed but kept smiling. He really liked this place; he didn’t have to hide his power, though he still hadn’t used it since he got there, but he wasn’t a nobody like at his home. He already had a new friend, the teachers were pretty cool, he got to learn incredible stuff, workout with a professional and will probably develop his power in the next few months! He groaned at the lack of a second towel but shrugged: he’d bring his own next time. He grabbed his bag and joined Clirk who was waiting for him. They talked on their way back to their room in the door, mainly about the killing course Zebh Uhra gave them. They had a few home works to do, mainly read a chapter or reread their notes. They quickly did so once they reached their room so they could relax the rest of the day. Ynk’s year was just starting but he was loving it.
