The Start to a Bad Day Part 3 By: Gryder I was the only one who showed up the next day, and I, obviously, passed all of the inspection and I was surprised that I passed with flying colors. When I was in basic I was having a blast, I know it sound weird, but it’s true, getting yelled at and forced physical activity, and surprisingly I gained about twenty pounds. I remember this one time, I think it was week three, when we were starting to march in an orderly fashion, like we were actually Marines, but as our drill sergeant said, and I quote “You are not Marines you are not even human to me you are less than maggots, you cannot call yourself anything other than useless unless I call you it first! Are we clear?!” and we would always say “Sir, yes sir” to everything he said unless he called us a peter puffer our something to the effect of, but generally he just yelled bullshit and we had to go with it so we were whatever he wanted us to be, but if we change our answer he called us a lying piece of shit. You know the worst weeks were the last six weeks, that was when I found out why my friends didn’t show up, the self-designated driver wasn’t to sober like he was supposed to be, and as you could have guessed, they crashed and died, and after that I can’t remember the rest of basic, but I can remember what they taught me no matter what sometimes I wonder where I learned what I used. You know I sometimes wonder where that six weeks of my life went, then I just remember that I doubt I’d ever get it back. When I got to the mess hall it was full of people from all branches of the military and, by the looks of it, civilians, and I thought wow, how did they fit all of these people in this little building, then I had the thought that it’s probably a bigger building than it looks like, I don’t think I worded that correctly, but if you understand it that’s okay. Later I found out all of the people were just a clean up crew and they were cleaning up from breakfast that is over at exactly 0600 hours, and for those of you who don’t know that’s 6:00 am, and at that time it was 0630 hours, 6:30 am, and unfortunately, I was, as I just found out when I smelled eggs and bacon, that I was hungry, and it’s not the first time I’ve been hungry.
