But while her diary program was open and her eyes were locked on the screen, she was definitely in a worse place than she was last Sunday. There were no new diary entries for her to look at; the last one she had saved was the one from two Saturdays ago. Since then, she'd deleted every entry she'd made, right after she'd made them. She didn't trust herself to remember to lock them anymore. She stopped saving her entries so Mom and Dad didn't find out things she didn't want them to know again, but this had only caused new problems. First, her diary had been her main way to get her feelings out, and without it, it felt like she was eating at herself. Second, just a little while ago, Mom had asked her if there was anything in her diary she wanted to share. When she told Mom she hadn't put any new entries in it, Mom said it was fine if there were locked things she didn't want anyone to see, and Freya said she didn't have anything new at all. Mom looked sad to hear that, then asked if it was because of what happened last week. It was, but Freya didn't want to say so, and when she couldn't say anything at all, Mom just nodded, said she was sorry, and left. So, she made Mom sad again. It felt like she was doing that a lot this last week. It wasn't just her parents she was having problems with, either. At school, she wasn't doing good with Christine anymore. Mom and Dad wanted the girls to be friends, but if they couldn't talk Chris's parents into it, as far as they knew, that was that. Now, since they read her whole diary, they knew she and Chris were secret friends. They hadn't talked about it yet, but Freya didn't want to make them lie or get them in trouble if someone asked about it. That was why she'd told Chris that her parents found out about them, so Chris should just cut things off with her. They wanted to be friends, but they just couldn't, so they'd be better off not trying anymore. Besides, Chris had other friends now, friends who didn't make her lie. All of that was what she told Chris, anyway. Chris took it harder than she thought, but she wasn't going to back down, not when she knew this was hard, but it could be worse if they kept being secret friends. She tried taking Mom and Dad's advice about being honest with them and told them about it that night. It didn't go very good, especially when she said she didn't think people could really be friends again once they stopped doing it so she didn't even think she could try. So, she hurt her parents and she hurt her friend. Never mind, they weren't friends anymore, were they? Now she found herself here, still not knowing what to do. Letting out a long sigh, she closed her diary and started surfing the net. She had time to watch some cartoons before bed, and it was better than staring at nothing. As she started watching one, a thumbnail in the "Recommended based on your searches" section caught her eye: "Teen parents: Why our babies were miracles..." That was as much of the title as she could read before all her patience was suddenly gone. Her jaw clenched and her hands balled into fists as she stood up and walked to her bed, almost stomping her way there, and snatched up a pillow. "Hahhh," she inhaled before burying her face in it and screaming, "AAHHHH!" Having lost her diary as a way to get her feelings out, she'd taken up yelling into a pillow when she couldn't keep things in anymore. Another scream later, she went from screams to words. Not-held-back, but muffled, words. "Babies aren't miracles! You're not a miracle!" she shouted. In her head, she was shouting at her little sister. Not that she really wanted to do it and hurt her too, but pretending was enough for Freya. "You're not a mistake, but you're not a miracle! You're an accident!" A few deep breaths later, she was about to keep going, but all her anger hit a wall when saying that made her realize something. Something she felt like she really should have figured out sooner. Something that hurt her to know, and it hurt a lot. She kept her face buried in the pillow as she sunk to the floor, completely tuning out the sound of the video still playing. For the first time, she was feeling real compassion for her sister, and she didn't know how to handle what she just realized, but she felt like maybe what she'd been going through was like what Mom had gone through when she was on the way. "You are an accident..." she mumbled into the pillow, sniffing as she felt herself tearing up, "...just like me." Strained Promises Epilogue Pregnancy is rarely easy, and not just for the mother. It's not like things would all get better. At least not all at once. Originally, the video that set Freya off referenced "Mistakes Into Miracles." Then I actually went and looked up what that was about and (wisely) changed my mind.
