... “If I free your friends, what’s next?” Chester egged with another question. The spirit obliged. “A necessary protection from all manner of malevolent, that is rest assured. For it is warriors such as us who would willingly lay their life for others first and foremost.” Chester raised an eyebrow. A warrior spirit? That definitely sounds interesting, albeit kinda fake. And “malevolent” too. Still, it won’t hurt to ask more. “What kind of ‘malevolent’ you are talking about?” “One whose title alone when uttered ushers great fear in many…Lord Vaco.”. Azure stated, emphasizing the dread carried by the name. “And he is?” Chester asked, causing Azure to become bewildered at the boy’s lack of knowledge. “He who shall overthrow the world! One who’ll sow chaos and reap man’s souls to be fed in maw of oblivion!” Despite Azure’s description, Chester simply stood there with raised eyebrows. “Do you not know of that man?” Chester scratched his temple absent-mindedly. It was very apparent to him that this “spirit”, or whatever, needed his help. But what exactly against for? Not that he cares for that stuff. He apparently dealt with two monsters last time, no need to be dragged into another similar thing. …On the other hand, this might had been the ticket he was looking for in a long time. Maybe he should entertain this. He looked at blue-colored spirit, and took his “negotiating” stance. “Ok, how about this, if we work together, what would I get out of this?” The question left the “spirit” in stupor. Still, he answered with a question, “Are you in ‘need’ of treasures?” Chester took a contemplative stance. “That sounds – enticing,” he rubbed his chin, for effect, “but I think I’d like something else. Maybe something I could use for the future?” “…Mayhaps whatever it is you desire shall be delivered, but I would be able to offer more if my companions were freed as well.” He replied. “I think - that could definitely be arranged!” Chester began walking, opposite direction to his school “Is that building not your school?” Azure was following the boy’s steps. “Wouldn’t your absence cause concerns from your masters?” “Yeah, I don’t think you know how it works here. They don’t really care if I were there either way, so I just go out when I want to.” Azure’s brows furrowed. “That sounds as if you are the royalty, or a prince of sorts…Are you?” “…Anyways, how about you explain to me, who are exactly you and your ‘companions’?” Chester said, ignoring the question much to spirit’s chagrin. Azure straightened himself, as if to create a more respectful image. “We are the Warriors of the Kingdom of Vita, our blades serving His Highness, King Magen, his daughter, beautiful Princess Rose, and…” Azure suddenly stopped and looked at Chester. The boy unbeknownst to himself was staring the whole time at the spirit out of curiosity of what he was saying. Mostly, because everything he just said made little sense to him. King Magen? Princess Rose? Kingdom of Vita? NONE of it was ever said in history books! Azure proceeded to cough and clear his throat. “Well, it seems you haven’t an inkling of an idea, which truth be told, is only natural, if we were to dwell on it. We haven’t walked in these lands since, perhaps, more than thousands of years ago.” “I’ll say.” Chester laughed. Azure wasn’t exactly had something to laugh at. Suddenly, Chester jolted in place. “What is the matter?” Azure looked at him confusedly. The boy heard a chatter. Based on the voices, it was a pair of old ladies, and one of them had a familiar unbearably throaty voice. Realizing exactly whom it belonged to, he quickly scurried to the nearest building and hid by the corner. Madame Cheshire was walking along with her friend, Miss Elephantus, towards the direction of the school. More than likely she needed to get some medical supplies from school’s nurse’s office, which she occasionally runs out of once a month. Or she had the children be tested for health, as she also occasionally does, and was going back to get all of them. This coulde mean that the house was unattended for now. Chester kept low and made no noise, while Azure barely even moved from his previous spot on the road. They made their way forward, a companion next to Madame Cheshire, an elderly elephant woman wearing large hat even for her, proclaimed with her trunk stirring the air, “I understand that you may know it already but oh, darling! That boy will be the death of you, and sooner you’ll deal with him, the better!” Miss Elephantus then pulled an apple and swallowed it full, chewing in one bite. “I always told you that he has to be dealt with efficiently and appropriately. That said, do you think that that is the right decision you are making? It’ll be costly for you.” “Sooner or later, he’ll have to go…” Madame Cheshire replied grimly, her frown as prominent as ever. Something about that one struck Chester a little bit harder, and he wasn’t sure why. Both passed by the blue spirit, neither even noticing a tall, blue man standing in the middle of the street. Chester found this kind off disturbing, seeing people genuinely not see what he sees. “Are these older dames…you know of them?” Azure asked once Chester came out of hiding. “Kinda, yeah.” He proceeded back towards his house. So his fears were true. Immediately he turned to Azure and began asking, “What were you saying again?” “I was saying that Lord Vaco must be stopped at all costs. It is a vow taken by us all, since last we drew breath. For if he were to not be stopped, the world shall be crumbled, turned to miniscule dust and be consumed into eternal darkness!” Azure over-exaggeration was not unnoticed by Chester, who somewhat chuckled. “Oooh! So really big bad guy, huh?” “…Yes,” Azure stared at the boy. Something in his visage told Chester that the spirit had hard time accepting the boy as is. Not like this was the first time this reaction was given to him. “Anyways, we’re by the house now.” Chester pointed forward, where his orphanage could been seen down the road. After few more minutes of walking, he then said, “Wait for me out here.” He then ran, leaving the silent blue warrior by himself without even looking back. He covered the long road with ease, and had already reached the gate to the orphanage. In quick succession, he jumped over the gate, went down the path towards the entrance, only to swerve to the side of his house. There grew a large, though unimpressive-looking, tree. Grabbing and stepping o familiar path of branches, he was able to get to the window that led to his bedroom. Cautiously, he opened the window without a sound, and was able to get in. Inside his bedroom, it was clean and quiet, exactly as Chester predicted. He went around trying to find the bag with daggers. He knew he hid them right below his bed, which was the first thing he checked. Much to his surprise, he found nothing in there. “What the…” He then reached the other side of his bed, then under mattress, then pillow and inside, then nearby corners, then the other kids’ beds. What if someone else found them? While not unlikely, the boy seen how little someone would care to touch his stuff. However, if they did, while a problem for Azure, doesn’t mean it was any real problem for Chester. The boy then began making an excuse in his head for why he couldn’t find them- “Ack! Stupid bucket!” Chester shook in his place from the loud voice that came from downstairs. It was highly familiar, yet impossibly different from anything he heard before. Loud, growly and…otherworldly. “Who thinks of leaving cleaning supplies lying around for people to trip themselves over? Are ya all idiots?!” The hedgehog hurriedly tiptoed towards the stairs as he heard the figure move about with his heavy footsteps. He hurried through the corridor and towards the flight of stairs from which he peeked to see the creature. Its red scales and bulbous figure then reminded the boy immediately who he was. “Hnnrgh! Curse that brat and these daggers! Once I deliver them, I’ll make sure to incinerate the whole house! Maybe eat a kid or two while I’m at it.” Chester stared as the demon waddled from one place to another, clutching his side while angrily flipping over tables and shelves. He couldn’t help but feel somewhat disoriented by the fact that this creature was actually real and did in fact attack him before. “Actually, what am I saying,” the monster then smirked, “I can just burn the thing now, don’t need to waste time in this putrid little house full of…people!” The demon then vibrated, shaking himself apparently with disgust. “But then again, I’ve already wasted too much time. As long as no one’s home, I can take these with me and it all will be peachy. Hehehe…” Chester crept backwards as the monster kept waddling towards the door. The boy quickly realized then and there the situation, the demon now has the daggers and was about to leave with them. And thinking on it…he decided he should sit this one out. It would be stupid to confront some monster like that, and he might as well just come up with an excuse for why he lost the daggers. The spirit might get mad, but who cares? How bad is the end of the world supposed to be? The hedgehog was creeping back to his room, ready to leave out the same way he came in. He had already moved far away from the view of the monster, when suddenly he heard a loud cry. “WHO GOES THERE!?” Chester felt his heart stop. Was he noticed? “AAAAHHH!!!” A sudden cry then pierced from behind. Curiosity crept on the boy, to the point that he wanted to see just what has happened. Still, he opted to get away before something else happens. “Dammit, you shouldn’t have been resurrected at all, you stupid blue ghost!” Chester stopped and realized exactly what was said, turning around, he listened some more. “It seems I have been marked by the minions of Vaco’s, to which I am grateful for it makes this easier! Hand over those daggers!” The other, familiar voice replied. Chester then finally decided to return and take a look at the scene again. When he approached the railings, he still saw the demon by the doors, but now he was facing Azure, who stood in his way, his sword drawn out. The surreal nature of the scene didn’t escape the boy, watching it all play out in the same old dirty place he was made to live under. The red demon picked the bag, which apparently fell to the floor, and clenched it to his self. “Oh yeah? Well, too late, ya mook! I was about to fry ‘em right here!” “You cannot, the magic rejects you enough that even your flames couldn’t touch it!” The red demon scowled. After having enough look at the scene, Chester decided that then was a good time to leave. He turned around and once again quickly began making his way out. Much to his surprise, he then heard a cackle. “You’d choose to laugh at the death’s door then, you putrid creature?” Azure’s voice echoed. The cackling then stopped. Chester was already in his room and began moving towards the window. He was carefully putting himself through it to reach the branches. He then heard someone say right behind him, “You weren’t actually resurrected now, have you?” Chester looked back and saw the demon was in the middle of his room. Chester mind froze, only to push him to automatically jump out of the window. He knew what was about to happen. However, that proved to be futile when the hand grabbed his neck with ease. “This time, I am careful with your quills, ya pipsqueak!” He a roaring laughter burst out from him. Chester dangled in his grasp, trying to catch breath, while also release himself from demon’s hand, all in the middle of the air. “Let him go!” Azure cried out, now in the same room. The blue spirit looked panicked, unable to do anything for the boy. “Well, well, WELL! Guess you can’t really do that stupid trick anymore, can ya?” He then dangled the bag with daggers in front of his face, smiling proudly at it, and then turned to the boy, who struggled outside the three storey window. “I hope you’re prepared what’s next coming to ya, ya stupid walking parasite!” Suddenly, Chester cried out, “I’ll do anything you want, please don’t kill me!” The demon gave another laugh. “What makes you think I’ll fall for the same trick twice, huh?! I am vastly more intelligent than any of you stupid animals. So-called ‘people’, ya’d get a better name from me and be happier for it!” Chester struggled to yell out next words. “Look, I was only interested in money! I never cared about whatever he was talking about! Please don’t kill me!” Red demon, not buying it, moved the boy closer to his face. “Why would you not help him, huh? Aren’t you scared of Lord Vaco?” “I don’t care about whatever you are trying to do!” Chester tried to open the hand more, hoping the monster will ease up. Sadly, no dice, but he continued, “I don’t even know who the heck is Lord Vaco! If anything, the last thing I care is about anyone from this stupid, stinky town! You can burn them all, for all I care!!!” The demon eyed the boy. Then slowly, the gigantic mouth formed a toothy grin, as he then transformed it into his biggest laughter yet. He laughed and laughed, letting his voice travel far and wide, and if anyone were nearby, they would surely take a look at what creature was making that noise. From behind him stood Azure, completely in shock, not believing the words that came out from the boy. “I thought my day was going to shit, and look at this guy! You really mean what you are saying?” Chester energetically nodded in response. The grip eased a little bit, but not by much for Chester. Azure couldn’t even react due to utter confusion. “This is probably the best thing in the world! I’ve had to lose one of my buddies because boss hated that we lost the daggers! Had to get another one away thanks to those stupid things! And looky here now!” Mal laughed again and turned to the warrior, enjoying himself as he saw the guy looking completely pitiful by the revelation. “Guess your return isn’t so glorious after all. TO THINK your vessel could end up just as cowardly and stupid as the rest of them! And you only have yourself to blame! AHAHAHAHA!!!” Turning back to the boy, he said, “Now, what do we do with yo-“ A sudden familiar pain hit demon’s body. Chester, one his end, felt the hand loosen, and soon he was let go as the demon doubled-down, causing him to fall right out of the window, and thankfully, land on a nearby branch. In his hands, were a bag he snatched from the monster’s hand and separate dagger, with blue handle and crimson red tip. “YOU LITTLE SHITTY PISSANT!!!!” His roar was heard throughout the town. …
