Dustin: April 12th, 2022 this day would be yet another sad day in the entertainment industry as we lost yet another great comedian and actor in this field he had been hiding his poor health from the public and had passed away because of it... that person we lost is none other... than Gilbert Jeremy Gottfried... Blake: I'll be honest, I was surprised to hear of his passing. I didn't know he was feeling sick. But, even if he's no longer with us physically, we'll have the roles he left behind to remember him by :) Dustin: indeed for those who don't know Gilbert Gottfried is well known to be one of those amazing actors with a distinct voice which featured an exaggerated shrill voice with strong New York accent Iago: oh THERE'S A BIG SURPRIIISE! Dustin: so yeah even if he is gone we will definitely remember him for the roles he made before he passed on from this world he's definitely a one of a kind person to know similar to George Carlin... makes me wonder how it would sound if Gilbert narrated Thomas the Tank Engine XD Blake: Ironically, Gilbert Gottfried is actually soft spoken and kind, even if his jokes can be crude. Just check out his roasts. They're hilarious, but dirty. Anyway, we're here to talk about 10 of his unique roles that really made us love him Dustin: indeed so in honor of the late and great Gilbert Gottfried here are the Top 10 Gilbert Gottfried Roles now some of these are mostly animated characters but they're pretty good in their own way too also some of these are new to us and others we knew from childhood so let's get on with it Number 10: Stink Bug - Bump in the Night [1995] Dustin: even though i have the complete series on DVD i will admit it's been a while since i replayed it but on YouTube i was able to see his episode where this character falls in love with Molly Coddle when she starts to smell bad after accidentally jumping into a trash can Blake: Basically for this character, imagine if Pepe Le Pew was attracted to a girl who just stunk instead of just looking like a skunk. This crass Casanova tries to woo Molly, but clearly, she's not interested :P Dustin: so after Molly gets cleaned up the Stink Bug is no longer interested in her and is in love... with Mr. Bumpy... wow even as early as '95 they were trying to push homosexuality in cartoons O_O Blake: We need more of that ^^ Anyway, this isn't the first time Gilbert Gottfried voiced an animated bug (We'll get to another one he did later) but his voice really suited the character. A real nasty sort, and super distasteful Dustin: indeed... makes me wonder how his and the closet monster's kids would look like... DON'T YOU DARE MAKE ANY ART OF THAT SUGGESTION! Number 9: Art DeSalvo - Duckman: Private Dick/Family Man [1994 - 1997] Blake: While I have heard a lot about Duckman, I haven't completely finished the series, so I didn't know that he was in this show until recently. Going off of the Duckman Wiki article, Art DeSalvo is a dishonest scam artist who often takes advantage of Duckman and his family Dustin: indeed so in the Season 2 premiere episode Papa Oom M.O.W. M.O.W. after Duckman inadvertently saved the President's life after trying and failing to grab some ass Art tries to help Duckman be famous as well as horn in on his fame that one bit with "Break a Leg" when Duckman asked "whose" is a crack up almost like something Gilbert would actually say in standup XD Blake: He also makes appearances in episodes like the Longest Weekend, How to Suck in Businesses without really trying, Where No Duckman has Gone Before, and Four Weddings Inconceivable Dustin: the latter of course being a non speaking cameo along with some of the other Duckman regulars since it was the cliffhanger finale anyways Gilbert really had some fun with this character even becoming one of Duckman's neighbors along with Dr. Ben Stein later in the show yeah Duckman's neighbors were Gilbert Gottfried [albeit as a character] and Ben Stein... man i wish i was in that neighborhood Number 8: Jack Frost - The Noddy Shop [Noddy] [1998] Dustin: another new role but one from a show that's probably twice as obscure as Duckman since it was lost media for a while until 2020, the 1998 PBS series Noddy often referred to as The Noddy Shop was a show created by Shining Time Station co-creator Rick Siggelkow the show is basically similar to the former the setting taking place in a magical location, puppet characters, green screen small characters like the Goblin family... JonTron: eww! i don't like 'em! i don't like Goblins! EEUGH!!! Dustin: and of course using a UK show to introduce to American audiences for Shining Time Station it was Thomas the Tank Engine since STS was also created by Thomas series creator Britt Allcroft and for The Noddy Shop it was... well the Cosgrove Hall Stop Motion animated series Noddy's Toyland Adventures kinda different from STS but still a good show nonetheless and i'm glad all 66 episodes are found now and on YouTube for all to see including the episode of today's subject Jack Frost is Coming to Town! [cover of the Rankin/Bass Christmas special Santa Claus is Coming to Town is shown] Dustin: i said Jack Frost! not Santa Claus! Blake: When we first see Jack Frost, we see him inside of a snow globe that was in a box meant to be opened on the first day of winter. So, since it was the first day of winter in that episode, it meant it was Jack's time to shine. He starts out by singing a song about himself, and then causes the temperature to drop inside the shop Dustin: i gotta say Gilbert's Jack Frost portrayal is pretty good he kinda looks like Martin Short's Jack Frost from Santa Clause 3 [despite this predating the movie] though i prefer this Jack Frost in a way he's just a hilarious trickster it's like if the Jack Frost that was mentioned in that one episode of Shining Time Station actually made an appearance only in a different show it's weird but hey it does have a similar connection in a way the most impressive thing he does was incase Planet Pup in a block of ice XD Blake: throughout the episode, Truman resists putting on a scarf that the aunt makes for him, saying it would look stupid on him. But, Jack Frost uses his ice powers to give Truman a cold, causing him to sneeze powerful sneezes that make the room shake Dustin: eventually Truman puts his scarf on which upsets Jack Frost so he leaves and everyone he froze that day are back to normal afterwards Jack does one more trick and it snows outside of the shop though this one is still new in a way i find it a pretty good episode and this is one of my personal favorite Gilbert Gottfried performances Blake: Indeed. Even if there are a lot of cold and ice puns, that's to be expected from a little embodiment of winter. And I personally enjoyed his song. As long as he doesn't sing, "Let it Go" XD Dustin: yeah... i wouldn't want to hear that for my eardrums' sake Number 7: God - Smiling Friends [2022] Blake: The newest animated series on Adult Swim, and boy has it got a great cast :) I may have only seen a few clips of it, but it looks very promising. The main character is rescued from Hell by God who passes on some valuable advice Dustin: this is also notable as Gilbert Gottfried's final voice acting performance overall before he passed away and playing none other than God himself to end it all off is quite an accomplishment sure he's no Morgan Freeman but hey Gilbert playing God was an amazing final role for him i still need to watch Smiling Friends myself but it looks pretty interesting UPDATE: Dustin: i did watch Smiling Friends recently on HBO Max it was weird but at the same time very interesting it's like if that shitty Cartoon Network show The Problem Solverz was actually good Blake: Indeed. And considering that the voice of the devil is the one and only James Rolfe, that should be a lot of fun Dustin: oh yes... speaking of James Rolfe Number 6: Fred Fuchs - Angry Video Game Nerd [2019] Dustin: beginning as early as the Nerd's Dracula episode from October 2008 there has been a bit of a running gag involving the name of one of the producers of the 1992 Francis Ford Coppola film, Bram Stoker's Dracula https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lSwwqDpoVc Dustin: so for a few episodes the name "Fred Fucks" would be heard in various episodes then came the 170th episode of the Nerd Life of Black Tiger which centers on a terrible PlayStation 4 game involving a black tiger and who should appear but Gilbert Gottfried actually playing a fictional Fred Fucks! they could have gotten the actual Fred Fuchs but this is mostly a joke since Fuchs wasn't really a game programmer so hiring someone like Gilbert Gottfried to play a fictional game programmer works out a lot better Blake: It is funny that we see him in Safari garb in the jungle, but we still see him make and play games. Talk about working with what you got :P Dustin: indeed especially since most of what he makes is made out of animal feces and this has got to be Gilbert at his crudest yet aside from Duckman and Smiling Friends we've seen him in mostly kid friendly shows even playing God in the previous entry but here since AVGN is already a crude show Gilbert goes all out swearing just as much as the nerd XD Blake: I'm not sure how James Rolfe found Gilbert for the role, but this is really a successful meetup. A friendship grew between the two Dustin: indeed these two are awesome together shame it didn't last long when Gilbert passed away... Number 5: Santa Claus - Billy and Mandy Save Christmas [2005] Blake: now this was an unexpected choice for the Jolly old elf. Usually when you think of Santa Claus, you would think of him having a deep and jolly voice. But a Santa with a shrill and loud voice... that's brilliant ^^ Dustin: how about the fact Santa also becomes a vampire in this special? Billy: San-- Santa: [pops out of the coffin growling and snarling] Grim: [screams] Billy: AI CHIHUAHUA! :O Santa: I'LL SWALLOW YOUR SOUL!!! Blake: Given that this is Billy and Mandy, you should expect supernatural activities, but to happen to Santa of all people is really surprising. Though what's more surprising than that is the fact that he was turned by his own wife, Nancy, who is the Head Head Vampire. After Billy uses Santa's cookie recipe to turn Santa back to normal, Billy takes Santa to apologize to Nancy for all the hard work put her through Dustin: yeah out of all the Mrs. Claus characters we've seen it's interesting to see quite a different portrayal as a vampire my favorite is still Jessica from Santa Claus is Coming to Town though but still it is quite different anyways Gilbert does do a good job as Santa whether he's normal or as a vampire or somewhere in the middle... also who turns someone into a vampire 7 times and who were the other people who cured him before this special? weird... Number 4: Berkeley Beetle - Thumbelina [1994] Dustin: it's been a while since i last saw Thumbelina so Blake's gonna have to help me out here ^^; anyways this movie was one of the movies made during Don Bluth's low point in the 90's after All Dogs Go to Heaven failed against The Little Mermaid in the harshest way possible along with Rock-A-Doodle, The Pebble and the Penguin and of course A Troll in Central Park which is the absolute worst Don Bluth movie Thumbelina is not that much better and is kinda like a spiritual ripoff of The Little Mermaid in a sense by using the same fantasy story writer being Hans Christian Andersen and same actress as the lead being Jodi Benson but there are some differences Blake: As Thumbelina trudges through the woods to make her way back home, Berkley Beetle arrives, gazing upon Thumbelina's beauty. He's enamored by her and wants to feature her as a showcase in his club. So, Berkley dresses her up as a butterfly and puts on a show with the song, Yer Beautiful Baby. AT first, the crowd is smitten by Thumbelina's looks, but once the disguise comes off, they ridicule her, and even Berkley says that Thumbelina is too ugly to be on stage. What a dick :P Dustin: yeah later Berkley teams up with Grundel Toad to capture Prince Cornelius and the toad steals the beetle's wings so he'll cooperate what a way to say do it or you won't get them back XD Blake: When they find out that Thumbelina is about to marry Mr. Mole, Berkley hesitates because Mr. Mole takes insects and boards them up. I guess even side villains have their own fears Dustin: i MAY need to rewatch this movie but we'll see what happens it is still one of the low tier Don Bluth movies compared to his masterpieces from the 80's like Secret of NIMH and An American Tail but we'll see Number 3: Digit - Cyberchase [2002 - 2022] Blake: Another role that surprised me, but not as much as it used to. Cyberchase is a pretty interesting show, especially since Christopher Lloyd voices the main villain. And Gilbert Gottfried voices as Digit, who helps our heroes out of any problem Dustin: i never really watch this show much even as a kid but when i do watch it i find it pretty interesting and Digit does have some pretty good laughs here and there even though in one episode which is supposedly the pilot which involves poddles he doesn't appear but still Gilbert does a good job i remember his voice somewhat Blake: OF course this isn't the only bird he voiced, but the fact that Digit is much bigger and wears clothes makes him really unique. An episode I remember a lot is when they were sorting out things in order to take care of a cloning problem Dustin: indeed Gilbert's even voiced the character for over 20 years obviously he won't be voicing him again since he passed away but still it was great to have him and i'm sure the Cyberchase crew was happy to have Gilbert on for the time he had there Blake: Indeed :) If you ever want a fun little nostalgic show to check out, definitely give Cyberchase a watch :) Number 2: Dr. Bender and Wendell - The Fairly OddParents [2001 - 2002] Dustin: now here's-- oh... i forgot the show creator became scum... eh is this a bad choice then? Dr. Bender: eh what's the word i'm looking for ah... NO!!! Blake: While I wouldn't talk about him, I would talk about Dr. Bender and Wendell for Gilbert Gottfried's sake. They made their debut in the season 1 episode, "The Same Game." During a game of Timmy Ball, Timmy, Chester, and AJ lose their ball in Dr. Bender's backyard. When Timmy goes to return the ball, he runs into Dr. Bender and introduces him to his son Wendell. Dr. Bender gives Wendell Timmy's ball, and plays with it himself, saying that he has the best teeth and thus should keep it Dustin: yeah these guys are written as pretty proud smug assholes and those teeth are too smooth for anyone to wear even if they are dentures and this guy is a dentist too and not a fan of Timmy's beaver like buck teeth anyways when Timmy wishes everyone was the same making everyone including himself gray blobs Bender and Wendell still act like smug proud assholes even though they don't have their perfect teeth anymore they say they're greyer even though everyone looks the same now then at the end of the episode Timmy's mother one of the few times she wasn't selfish helps Timmy stand up to Dr. Bender and Wendell Blake: Dr. Bender would later appear himself in the episode Shiny Teeth, where Dr. Bender steals Chip Skylark's perfect teeth. And he and Wendell even appeared in the Scary Godparents episode, the Halloween special Dustin: eventually Wendell was dropped and Dr. Bender would make sparse appearances in one Season 5 episode he was now voiced by... well the creator... but it feels like a poor imitation i prefer Gilbert Gottfried Blake: Definitely :P This is another part of the reason why I don't like him :P But Dr. Bender and Wendell are well-written villains, even if they are jerks Dustin: now before we get to Number 1 we'd like to have some Honorable Mentions Honorable Mention #1: Himself - TruTV Presents: World's Dumbest... [2013 - 2014] Blake: Now, my brother and I have been fans of World's Dumbest for a long time, and it's helped us to recognize a lot of celebrities; Danny Bonaduce, Chuck Nice, Judy Gold, Chelsea Peretti, and Tonya Harding among others. In later seasons, Gilbert Gottfried would be brought onto the show to add his own brand of crass humor to dumb people or smart inventions Dustin: indeed even though the show was on it's last legs when Gilbert Gottfried was brought on it is still quite honestly a great performance and the way he riffs certain things is funny XD Blake: For sure. I was honesty surprised to see him on there, but I'm glad they did Honorable Mention #2: Jerry the Bellybutton Elf / Adonis - The Ren & Stimpy Show [1994] Dustin: yeah... Ren & Stimpy may have been groundbreaking for Nickelodeon along with Rugrats and Doug but the original creator's creepiness still lingers this show's likability be it the original or the Adult Party Cartoons hence why this is an honorable mention but it's still got a great Gilbert Gottfried performance in the episode of the same name Stimpy plays around with his bellybutton despite Ren warning him to stop and eventually Stimpy climbs inside and meets a small blue cyclops covered in bellybutton lint called Jerry the Bellybutton Elf Blake: Jerry and Stimpy hit it off at first, and everything seems hunky dory. That is until dinner time when Stimpy serves Jerry lint loaf, to which Jerry says: Jerry: Lint loaf.... LINT LOAF!? I HATE LINT LOAF! Blake: And chases Stimpy on the intent of murdering him. Brutal XP Dustin: eventually Jerry corners Stimpy and Stimpy not being very smart as usual suggests to throw the lint loaf in the microwave to which Jerry screams, tears his skin off and growing in massive size to... a giant monster pork chop renaming himself to Adonis Blake: Man, this show was weird, and way ahead of its time XP Somehow Stimpy manages to get out of this alive, and is more careful about playing with his belly button Dustin: yeah... but John K. is still a creep Number 1: Iago - Aladdin franchise [1992 - 2022] Blake: Now, here's the role that most people think of when they think of Gilbert Gottfried. Though Gilbert has joked and said the film wasn't very good, he genuinely admits that Iago is his favorite role to play :) Dustin: when we first see Iago he acts mostly like a normal parrot but later he's seen that he does it as an act when he talks to other people that's not Jafar as he talks perfect english even though he doesn't like the Sultan's moldy crackers he also complains a lot and it's pretty funny XD Blake: Yeah. Usually he goes along with Jafar's schemes, but when Jafar was turned into a genie, Iago managed to escape and even managed to go through a redemption arc Dustin: indeed beginning as early as Return of Jafar two years after the first movie Iago switches sides to be a good character in the TV series seeing as he is one of the more popular characters in the movie along with the Genie as such Gilbert comes back to voice Iago almost every time for 30 years the only time he didn't voice Iago was in the 2019 remake of the movie where instead he's voiced by Alan Tudyk and Gilbert confirmed he wasn't asked to reprise the role i mean for Will Smith replacing Robin Williams it was excusable since Robin passed away 5 years ago when the remake was announced but Gilbert was still alive it would have been nice to see Gilbert in the live action movie but eh what are you going to do? Blake: Yeah. Still, when it comes to Gilbert Gottfried's performances, it's hard to forget about Iago :) Dustin: agreed Dustin: while Gilbert will definitely be missed it won't be hard to forget his amazing performances whether he's a parrot or even God himself he's always be here to make us laugh Blake: Indeed. And if something of his you like isn't on this list, please let us know your favorite Gilbert Gottfried's contribution to entertainment :) Dustin: indeed and Gilbert thank you for many years of great performances we will miss you dearly R.I.P.
